motion sickness
« on: January 26, 2012, 10:22:28 am »
I almost never get sea sick on the kayak when fishing.  I do not take any meds for it, but do wear sweatbands with a bead that supposedly prevents motion sickness.  I wear these diving as well but in the water, it happens frequently.

any tips?  Dramamine just puts me to sleep.

Someone suggested I try Bonie? next time I go out.  Dramamine has the same effect on me, but for the most part im fine on the water, but once I start driving home...  :smt009

Many, Many years back I would get sea sick all the time.  Tried scopace and it did the trick.  Used it for 2 years and now I can read a news paper down in the galley in rough sea's , hung over, not using anything.  I don't think it is a cure but it did that for me.  I turned a few friends on to it and it worked great for all of them.  Here's 1 link I found where you can get the patch...I used the pills...

The patch is available in Canada OTC:  http://www.northwestpharmacy.com/ProductSearch.aspx?s=scopolamine

I get seasick if I don't get enough sleep the night before.  So now I take a Dramamine the night before which helps me sleep.  In the morning I take another half of a pill.  That has worked well for me.

I've used the patch, with mixed results.  One time I had it on, and got sick still.  Another time I didn't have it on, got sick, and put one on and it went away.  I'm told the pill is superior to the patch.  Gonna ask my Dr. for the pills next time. :smt002

Anecdotal evidence for ginger, but be careful.

call your doctor if it causes a boner that lasts more than sixteen hours.

I get seasick even on a calm day if I don't take my pills. Tried the Scopolamin patches before. They're really strong and make your mouth dry for a long time. Stopped taking that and switched to Scopace. Was told they contain the same sustance, but the Scopace is much milder and don't make your mouth dry like the patches. Take one the night before. Take one when I drive. Take an extra one on the water if the sea is rough. The effects of Dramamine to me is almost as bad as having motion sickness.

Scopace .04mg. Your doctor will need to prescribe them, mine had some trouble looking it up and was not familiar with it prior to my request. I found that Costco was one of the only pharmacies in my area that has it readily available and cheap. This is by far the most effective medicine I have used for motion sickness, and believe me I have hurled too many times to count when it is rough. With only one of these little friends I have ridden out the most nasty 15' swells with no trouble at all. One the night before or morning of and you are good to go. I try to keep a few in my PFD just in case I need one since I only take them when I know the swells will be up.

I have never gotten seasick on a boat of any kind, but on occasion I will get a little sick while diving.  Most, if not all the time it is because I inadvertently swallowed seawater.  Try a nicer snorkel, and be a little more careful so as not to swallow too much water.  Also, ginger seems to help quite a bit, and when I get out of the water and I'm still feeling a bit queasy I'll drink a beer and feel right as rain.

I have the curse of loving ocean fishing but suffer from motion sickness. :smt013

I have tried  dramamine, bonine, scopalamine, ginger, elastic pressure point bands, electric wrist bands, etc.

Of all the oral meds prescription Scopace pills work the best for me, no sleepiness, a little dry mouth, wears off in 6hrs.You can adjust the dose 1/2 to 2 pills on the fly,it works pretty fast for me. I usually take it 30minutes before and as needed OTW.

Meclizine works for me in a pinch and I used it for years but it makes me drowsey and lethargic.Less drowsy formula dramamine and bonine are meclizine 25mg pills available over the counter really inexpensively.Bonine is $4-$6 for 8 tablets, generic meclizine is $6 for 100 tablets.

Dramamine is a antihistamine and it knocks me out, better for sleeping than fishing.

The electric wrist bands seemed to help and help after you already feel sick, they give you little shocks at adjustable timed intervals. But they are not waterproof! BTDT

I'm sold on the Bonine, worked great for me.  Nothing works at all for my wife though.

I have one of those wrist watch electro shock devices that some swear by.   You're welcome to try it out.  PM me.

Kids liquid benadryl  works every time for me. Over the counter generic works well. We were informed by a Dr. that it would help our 3 year old with car sickness.(and it work for her as well)

My uncle has kidney cancer.   The meds make him super nauseous.  Other than the special meds he is able to get in Boulder Co, he said a ct scan tech told him to take a quick sniff of rubbing alcohol.  He was feeling sick during one scan, tech grabbed a little foil alcohol wipe pack and he kept taking little sniffs of it.   He was unable to travel out to Ca with all of his meds.   At dinner Saturday night, he had a film canister with a cotton ball in it covered in alcohol.  Every 10 min or do, he would take a quick sniff.  He said it helped but he was going to see an old friend the next day for more "meds"

Maybe either is worth a try.

thanks for all the tips guys.  I think I will try bonine/Meclizine first.  If that fails, then on to the scopace pill.

As to the electric watch, doesnt help while diving, when my problems arise.  But that thing helped Shark_bait get over motion sickness as a kid.

Emorgan, sorry to hear about your Uncle and the crap he has to go through relative to his meds.
