While visiting relatives on Oahu, I got a chance to dive with one of the old locals for Tako.  I still don't have an eye for spotting them.  All the ones you see in the video, he spotted for me to grab.  Loving my new Liquid Image Mask Cam!

Enjoy.

That was cool.  Do you think a wetsuit is totally necessary in Hawaii?  I'm going to Maui in May and was wondering about spearfishing.  The closer we get to May, the more questions I'll be asking the board here  :smt003
Anyhow, awesome video, local knowledge is key!

A wetsuit isn't "necessary", but I like it for a couple reasons.  1) You can stay out longer without getting cold, and 2) it protects you from unexpected contact with the reef which can cut you up pretty bad.  Have fun out there!

He didn't tell you to bite it between the eyes?  That same trick of agitating the pus does not work on the tako I've found here.

You only do that for the big buggers! I must not be looking in the right places, because I have yet to find one diving out here ( although I don't have much success on my own there either, so I probably just don't have an eye to spot them)

There were actually a decent amount of fish, and I "thought" I turned the camera on to catch them.....Apparently not.  Also missing was some footage of me following a few sea turtles around. Oh well, chalk it up to a rookie videographer mistake.  You really can get away without a wetsuit, but it gets cold after a few hours without one. Speaking of grabbing things, one thing I learned not to grab out there is the Sea Urchins.  Bastards aren't like the ones here, If you touch them, they aggressively stick their spines into you! :smt013

Not sure, but I figured if the locals stayed away from them probably a reason.  I have seen some HUGE ones out there in the past
