I only went once & was recovering from pneumonia so we didn't kayak. I did enjoy my "recuperation" at the Waimea Plantation cottage we rented. Having a brewery on the premises is about the only way to improve on the Kauai experience.

I haven't been Kauai, but I did go to the Big Island.  I caught my one and only Marlin there (non-yak).  Had a blast!

Cool, I'll be there at the end of Feb. with the fam. for 5 days then off to Waikiki for some big city vacationing. :smt001

Last time there we rented kayaks in Wailua,  just North of the Airport and did some rec. paddling up to a cool waterfall, standard tourist stuff. Mtn biking is also cool there. Hiking is off the hook. The surf was pretty strong on the Island and we didn't venture out, I'd go with a guide. I shore fished with the fly rod around Poipu for some cool reef fishes.

Princeville area was calmer, I might try kayak fishing there this time. Gonna bring a travel rod, probably the 8wt. :smt044

When are you two gonna be there?

We will be there March 8-19...heading to Napali Coast and will definitely hike that, and want to kayak it as well.  We must find some fishing though :)

Everyone does the Kaui river.  I recall seeing some decent size fish in there, so you should consider bringing a packrod.

IMO, Kaui's beaches are generally $hitty compared to say Maui.  But the river paddle is an experience that I very much enjoyed and would do again and again.  Very fun
Searching for fish I am.
Eat them I will.

Your going when the north shore is hit and miss depending on weather.  If you hit it when the swell is down be sure to snorkel at Tunnels.  It is the best on the island.

I'm headed there at the end of Feb also. We have a timeshare in Princeville & usually go in July or August, but my wife's friend called a few days ago with an offer we can't refuse. She has a house rented for her and the family, but her son just broke up w/ his GF, doesn't want to go, blah blah. So all we need to do is pay the transfer fees for the airfare and we have a free vacation.  :smt003

All the years we've been going to Kauai I've never managed to kayak fish. Kayak Kauai has a good rep in Hanalei tho, and I always see a lot of people there. There are always locals fishing from the bank of the Hanalei River too, so there must be something there.  :smt002 If you decide on a boat trip check out Captain Don. http://www.captaindonsfishing.com/ We had a blast during his 1/2 day trip last August and came home with enough tuna for 2 days of sushi and tataki for 6 people.

Well,

I was loaded for Bear, I had plans on going out on a kayak whale watching tour out of Poupoi, or what ever it's called on the south side... It was going to be a guided trip out to the blue water and they were all good with me fishing along the way...

wife came down with a 102 temp.... and other stuff happened that just being there a week, I really did not get much of a chance to fish...  but, Kayak Kauai, in Hanalle, will rent a scambler for $30 a day...  for us staying in Princville area,  it was blown out and huge swell...  anyway..

what i do suggest for action...  would be to carolina rig squid strips,  give your self about a 2' leader and you should hook up... ya can find squid in most markets etc..

I also heard if it's raining pretty good, the fresh water fishing can be a bit tough...

anyway, like I said, I kinda had to bail the 30lbs of fishing gear I brought, but I will return...

  beautiful place...

Rent a kayak at Hanalei Bay and paddle up the river. There are Papio near the mouth and oio in the channels in the bay. 8-10# spinning gear with some small grubs, gulp crabs, small rap alas and kastmasters will get you into fish. South of Hanalei are some good beaches for shore fishing. In the poipu area, around the hyatt regency, there is a public beach next to the cliff diving area. If hike along the cliff area there is good shore fishing.

Near the Wailua river there are several kayk shops - Ali'i Kayaks, Kayak Wailua, and Kayak Kauai. I also believe they rent kayaks pretty cheap at the old Hawaiian village off 580 / Kuamoo Rd. you'er already a mile or so up the river. They say there is everything from mackerel to baracuda in that river. I hear kayak fishing in Kauai is not as big as on the other islands. Kauai is pretty much the end of the line. if you get blown out there's nothing but the big blue.
Go online on Aquahunters - Kauai section and ask for fishing info  - or email Boogie D on Oahu.  He runs a kayak fishing guide service out of the North Shore and would probably know who to contact on Kauai

Just found out that Plenty Pupule has opened a shop in Lihue.

"Our Kauai store (Nawiliwili) is open 5 days a week. 9-5
Closed Mondays and Tuesdays 245-5005 "

They will know kayak fishing, I'll bet the far side opposite the cruise ship terminal and going towards the mouth of the harbor would be a good spot.
