looking a little deeper, you can tell the difference in the dorsal fin...the dorsal of the spot doesn't look like the one of my buddy's...so most likely it's a LM right?

Main way I tell is the mouth on a spotted is like a smallie's and doesn't extend back down the side of the fish like a lmb does. Smallie & spotted mouths are pretty similar.

LMB lower jaw extends past the eye. Spot and SMB does not.

Spotted bass have a patch of teeth on the tongue like sandpaper.  LMB do not have the distinctive patch. Many of the black bass in the Sac Valley are really hard to differentiate.  Clear Lake spots and LMB are pretty easy to identify.
