The tides were looking really good this week for sturgeon so I couldn't resist. Sent the hook up via the message boards and three brave souls set out for some Dino Hunting: Myself, Chuwy4, and Hamachijohn.

Got to the Loch Lomand Bait shop at 8 a.m. for an expensive combo of Mud/Ghost shrimp which were half dead. (I'm pumping my own next time!).We drove to China Camp and launched at 9:00 a.m. The weather was a little choppy in the morning but the wind never came up as predicted. It was glass the rest of the day.

Chuwy4 was the first one on with an undersized striper that went back. An hour later John hooks up and it takes him for a sleigh ride... after 20-25 minute it comes up and splashes it wings (BAT RAY)!  :smt009 damn.. 0-2 for far for the sturgeon.

As predicted once the tides started turning the bite came on. Chuwy hooks up with a barely undersized Dino at 45.5! We measured 7 different times, but she had to go back. Next time!  :smt010

John was the hot hand of the day. Around 2:45 he hooks up. I yell " You on john" He yells back..."I think it is a BAT RAY" Lol!  :smt005  15 minutes later we see color and it turns out to be a 49 inch Dino.

THE MUD WALK OF SHAME:

4:30 p.m. we made the trip back to the launch. By now the tide had completely receded and we were left stranded to pull our kayaks through the mud. I've heard about this before...but you can't explain it until you've been through it. (Some A*Hole was filming us too! lucky he split before I came on shore or else his he would be filming my boot up his A**.)

Never the less, it was a great day with some great guys. John is a class act and split his sturgeon three way so we all got a piece to take home.

Otobe and myself fished form high tide to around 4:30 pm for nothing today. the water was 50 degrees at launch and progressively got colder as the day went on to end up at 43. Damn cold for the bite. We carried up at rat rock and no mud at low tide there. A bit of a climb but nothing compared to the walk and the cleaning it takes to get that stuff off. John, congrats on the dino. You are a lucky guy! No one we heard had a fish all day. Cheers fellas!

Thx for the encouragement fellas.
Great weather, even better company, and who doesn't like smelling like a swamp methane ?

I've been blessed this year with many firsts - First trout, First salmon (in season), First Striper since 94', First Yellowtail, and now First Sturgeon.  Joining AOTY helped me accomplish my goal this year of getting outside my comfort zone of RF and lings; and joining NCKA has been good for the soul.

Looking forward to more hookups, friendships, FOOD, and my first WSB in 2012!
