whiskeytown producing
« on: December 22, 2011, 07:50:02 pm »
hit the lake today from 10am to about 3:30, nice and glassy all day with a little wind right around noon that died down quickly. Had lots of big hits and 7 came to color before spitting the hook. I had to wonder if my choice to not get the shinny new hooks I was looking at yesterday was the right decision. A few more came to color and got off before I decided to look through every thing I had an found a nice looking, slightly rusted 1/0 worm hook. It worked perfectly and I came home with 3 nice size trout. I usually live by "limit your kill not kill you limit" but being able to eat what I catch with out worrying about growing a second head is still kind of novel to me, and I'm broke. I later found out Im the worst filleter ever, the 1.99 BPS fillet knife Im using is about worthless. All in All a nice day to be out there.

Right on.  WTG on the trout.  I'll bet it was chilly up there this morning.   :smt001
Chasing salmon for the summer, and maybe a halibut too.

Did you go around the bend and paddled by the pump house?
Or did you stay straight of the ramp.  We camp there every year and that lake never disappoint.

all streams are closed to fishing right now so i stayed out front of the ramp, and across to the south off a few points. It got a little chilly out there. When I landed the sun went behind the mountain and it got real cold real quick.

Good job JBaker!  The trout and salmon out of Whiskey Town are clean fish for sure.  I usually cook my trout whole but there is a trick for filleting them that is completely boneless.  I gut them as normal, then run the fillet knife down the back to the beginning of the ribs.  I then use a thumb to separate the meat from the rib bones.  It makes a very clean fillet.  It works great with trout and salmon.  Trout and salmon are so soft, it is hard to fillet them normally.  Coat the fillet with cajun seasoning and garlic then fry...oh man that makes me hungry!

I look forward to more reports!  Maybe all us NorCal boys will have to hook up soon.

Matt

I never had any success with bass or salmon but I guess it's because I don't try hard enough.
I have success with trouts and blue gills on that lake though.
Thanks for the report :smt003

slow trolling candy bar spoons with a worm about 18" back. Candy bars are usually for tossing into kelp for calico bass, but there the only thing I had that resembled a dodger/flasher and they worked pretty good. I'll be around next week and Im down for a meet up. Ive been up broke creek and only have a pass for whiskeytown. But I defiantly want to check out shasta soon, either way just post or pm and Im in.

Hey Jeff, thanks for the reply, not sure what a candy bar lure is but it seems to work  :smt002, we can hit Whiskeytown or I can pick you up with my truck and hit Shasta. I'm up for Tues.,Thurs., or Fri.
