I agree the Hobie seats aren't the most comfortable thing but I kinda thought that was just the way it is with yak seats.  I have only ever had Hobies.  I find that pulling the straps as tight as possible so the seat cradles my back works pretty well for me but I still have some lower back pain sometimes after a long day.  I find the bottom of the seat to be a bigger issue.  I'm gonna get one of the gel pads, I have seen used by a few guys.  Have you tried adjusting the pedals to see if that helps with the back issue.  If the pedals are too short and the stroke is too long, it cold be causing back issues.

Walmart-gardening knee pad <$5.
Sit on it.
Might not solve the prob but it will certainly help.
You can also take a 12'' piece of pool noodle and slice it long ways so you have a 12'' half.
Put this behind your lumbar region, flat side against the seat.
Can't guarentee it will help but it's worth a shot.

I recently picked up one of these and tried it for the first time this weekend.  I love it because my butt and back don't hurt anymore.

My problem with the seats is the pegs don't stay in place no matter how tight I have them :smt013
Also, if I slide forward off the seat when I slide back the bottom bunches up and I have to lift my fat ass off it so it will lay flat again :smt012
I'm thinking a few velcro strips on the bottom of the seat may help if I can adhere the strips to the yak?

banjotad, rroland I have the same problem-- them bastards will not stay put.  I have even tightened them down with pliers to no avail.  I have adjusted the back straps so that my back is supported and comfortable, but my issue is with the bottom coming loose.  I am looking into ways of securing it with an upholsterer up here in Isleton.  I may even look into a permanently glued seat pad like the Necky Vector 13 uses.  ----Jeff

I added you 2 upgrades and now can sit on mine for hours without any problems.

Yakpad Gel Filled Kayak Seat and Hobie Seat Peg kit.  The seat peg kit makes a ton of difference and prevents the seat from sliding around.

For the ones with peg issues, have you tried sanding the holes?  I read somewhere (maybe here?) to sand with light sand paper.  This was the first mod I did on mine prior to use and it has worked pretty good.  I have rented several hobies previously (which did not have sanded seat peg holes) and there is a noticeable difference.

Mel, thanks for the post.   I have the same problems with my seat.  We should all sent a letter out to Hobie and maybe they will improve on the design of their seats.  We really shouldn't have to spend extra bucks to fix a bad design.

Rey - You can get the seat pegs for $10 at Sunrise Sports in Livermore, very easy to install.  Well worth the money for the comfort added.  I think they came out on 2010 models.  My 09 seat without the upgrades was uncomfortable.  I did not have to do any sanding on mine.

Unfortunately, I think it's the nature of the mirage drive system.  On a regular paddle yak, you're sitting at a 90 degree upright position which eventually leads to a sore butt but rarely a sore back.  With the Hobie setup, you're sitting more at a ~50 degree angle which takes a toll on the back.  Stopping and stretching every hour or so helps out a lot, but to get 3-4 hours + of fishing without a break is tough.  The i-comfort seat does help though, it alleviates 'swamp ass'.

The i-Comfort seat pad is helpful. Keeps you above minor water pooled in the seat bucket too. I mounted it underneath the existing seat pad.
So far so good - though most folks put it on top.

I bought a blue/white high-backed cooler (w/wheels and slide up "airport" handle) from Coleman. It gave me the unexpected benefit of much needed back support for the Hobie seat. Definitely has helped a lot.

My seat pegs were a problem at first popping out when the yak was new. I think it was too smooth inside the hole. I also think I was over tightening them as well. Now they seem to stay in fine. I tighten just a little past snug and don't wrench them in.
