revolution 13 or Outback
« on: November 04, 2011, 08:56:42 pm »
Being an avid mountain biker I don't know why I didn't buy a peddle yak in the first place.  Maybe the higher cost scared me.  Anyway now that my Trident 11' is rigged out I've decided that I want a Hobie.

The Rev 13 is my first choice.  The Ouback  might have more stability with the additional width but it's also shorter at 12'.  I'll be fishing mostly fresh water but do want to get in the salt at some point.  Also want to do more kayak camping trips and need storage plus stablity when loaded with gear.

Any pro or cons on either yak?  Does the length makes sense for Ocean fishing?

Base on this info, I would suggest the Outback.

Jack, your wants have no bearing on his needs.

That said Flying Yak, Jack is correct in that most people have the Revo because it is so versatile.  But based on your comment:

I'll be fishing mostly fresh water but do want to get in the salt at some point.  Also want to do more kayak camping trips and need storage plus stablity when loaded with gear.

I'd think that you'll want an Outback.  You'd be able to transport just about anything you need.

That fact that the Outback is only 12' isn't the issue on the ocean, it is the fact that it's such a barge at 34" across, which coincidentally is the reason why you'll want it because it will store your stuff when camping.  Most people on the ocean are looking for something a little more sleek that will track better, hence the Revo.

As for the Revo, I can't really give you any feedback because I don't have one.  When I was shopping for my second kayak, I knew it would be a buddy boat and I went with the OB because of it's width.  But know, it has been on the ocean with no problem, it just takes a little more work pedaling the barge.

Revo, Revo, Revo!!!!!
If you go kayak camping you aren't going to take too much stuff with you if you do it right. Like backpacking, you shouldn't bring a cast iron dutch oven, skillet, a 2 burner coleman propane stove, ect. Less is more and the lighter the better.
The Revo is fine for kayak camping and the stability difference between the two IMO is so little when compared with how much more the Revo has to offer in speed, manueverability and versatility.
Plus with the extra camping gear you want less of a barge to have to plow through the water.
The Revo is so much more versatile than the Outback you will not regret having it over the other.

I'd hate to backpack into Desolation Wilderness with those guys.  :smt044 :smt044 :smt044
That's the kind of packing where they use mules or llamas.

1 vote for Revo. They do great in the ocean and the big ol' hatch in front has plenty of room for camping stuff.

Guys, thanks for all of your input.  The storage was a big debate for me but, I went with the revo since I'll probably car camp more than remote and the revo will cover more water quicker.  I got a kick out of some of the pics of overloaded yaks and rafts in tow.  Maybe I should keep my OC for a tow barge.   :smt001

Since I also do some mountain bike camping my gear is small and light. It should fit in the revo with some creative packing.

When in doubt listen to Tote!  I know I could pack just as much stuff in my Revo as I could pack in my P15.  The Revo with turbo fins is a rocketship!

I love my Outback!  In the 4 months I've had it, i've done various excursions out in the ocean via surf launches and crabbing in HMB without any problems.  It does a great job when navigating over huge swells and stability is great for lifting pots/traps filled with crab - I'll probably fall off before flipping my yak.  I'll probably need a Revo or AI later down the road for speed but I'm happy for now.
