If I could do it all over again?  I was fortunate enough to be able to do it all over again, sort of.

Back in '07, when I was pimping my Adventure, I put a scotty rod holder on the left side and a RAM on the right.  The RAM is rock solid but the Scotty I'm not all that fond of because there is lots of "play" in it.  Granted, because it's a Hobie, I purchased the rod holder extender to get my rod butts above my pedals and that may have something to do with it, but I've also got extenders on my RAM and don't get the same movement.  If I could do it all over again, I would have gone RAMs on both sides.

So when I purchased my Outback in '09 I put RAMs on both sides and have no complaints whatsoever!

Now I know that a lot of guys don't like RAM mounts because of the ball slippage but in a combined 6+ years of RAM mounts on 2 kayaks, I've never experienced slippage.  Guess maybe I've gotten lucky?

I have both. Scotties up front on the Adv, Rams behind the seat.
Scotties on the rails of the Revo, Rams behind the seat.
They all serve their purpose quite well.

Everything I spoke of was regarding rod holders.

Although on my Outback I did use a RAM mount for the FF and do like it a lot.

As long as you put in deep grooves in those Ram rod holders, it wouldn't slip as much. If I had to do it all over again on my Revo, I would have done it with the Scotty instead. Well, I'm bringing some materials for Glen to do a rework on my Revo this weekend at Tiki. This is good for you to see so you can make up your mind which  way you want to go with.

Which Scotty flush mount best suited for Hobie revo( the round or square)?? Or it doesnt matter?? Just wanted to know if they would fit just fine on the side rail to install the rocket rod holders.

Not sure about the round ones, but I used a rectangular model and it fit fine on my Revo

I used the Scotty square mounts on my adventure and we installed some on Tad's revo.  They fit perfectly on the rails.  I use the Scotty rocket launchers which keeps the rods butts out of the cockpit.

The nice thing with Scotty is you can use the crab davit with the holder.  Very nice for pulling full pots.

I like the flat profile of the Scotty mounts.  It makes it easy to invert my kayak and slid it on the roof rack of my truck.  It also keeps the rail clear for entry and exit while diving.  I do have a Ram mount ball for my fish finder in the mast tube.  It works great as well.  I do admit I am more of a Scotty fan though.  Scotty gives you a lot of options, no slip holders, and the flush profile.

Depends on where you are putting them.  You can see that most people use the rectangular mount because it fits so nicely on the rail, almost like Hobie intended for it to go there.  If you have a lot of room, you can use the round one, but there aren't a lot of places on a Hobie where the round mount will fit.

I, too, liked the fact that the scotty mount is low profile and flush.  It definitely helps when loading the yak upside down on the vehicle.  For me, the reentry thing isn't an issue with the RAM though because it's so far forward on the rail, almost parallel with the mirage drive, that it doesn't get in the way when reboarding the yak.

One thing to consider with the round mounts - you have to drill three holes.  The main hole and then there are two other small protrusions which keep it from turning/twisting.  The round ones are the same as the bulkheads I use on my fish tanks (minus the two protrusions) and I was expecting it to only screw tight with the rubber gasket making it waterproof.  Not the case.  Check out the Scotty website - they have diagrams of each which show dimensions, what size holes to drill, etc.

I completely agree with Jedmo.  I have 2 RAM balls on my Revo and unhappy with the rod holders slipping out of place.  If I could do it again I would go with a Scotty system.  My Rams are set up on top of the rudder pulley handles.  I have a RAM system for my FF and happy with it.

Both  :smt002  Both have advantages and disadvantages.  I LOVE my RAM mounts for FF's, but still not so sure about the rod holders I got.  I do like the RAM Tube on my X-Factor up front, since I only want one up front to stow the rod while rigging, and occasionally like to drift fish with it.  For freshwater I like to use the Scotty mounts (on my crate) for DR, and rod holders and it works out well for me.  But you can also combo the Scotty Mounts and RAM mounts together and get the best of both worlds   :smt003 Like the rectangular flush Scotty mount, you can add a RAM ball mount adapter to it, and be able to use either one of them depending on what you want to do  :smt002
