Good thing Hobies come with paddles, or those darn Hobie pedals

Mr. Hobie was very kind and replaced my defective Hobie paddles, and did it quickly.  Just my luck, out on the Sacramento River and the left pedal arm breaks, I repeat pedal, not paddle.  A new problem.  Last time it was broke paddles.  This time broken pedals.  My Adventure is nearing its second birthday, I hope this isn't the beginning of the end.  I suppose they are not built to last forever.   No real problem out on the river, I still had a paddle.  Could have been a bigger problem on the ocean.  Right now I am having a little trouble getting the pedal arm replaced.  My home town kayak shop dumped Hobie last year.  Hobie wont do the warranty directly and insists some other dealer will do the warranty without me driving there, and then will send me the new part.  Of course all this burns time and is a little frustrating.  I am a bit skeptical, currently I am in contact with a Hobie dealer in Sacramento.  I will let you know how it goes.

I was "talking" with the hobie guy via PM and he said that they think the failures are coming from those of us with turbo fins that accelerate very quickly- which makes perfect sense as that puts a lot of strain on the system (this after my mast failure last week, and sprocket failure the month before)
I'm actually going to speed up slowly now-- instead of rushing like i was leaving the line...and see what happens

I guess Hobie builds its stuff like Honda does: excellent engineering but light duty. Looks like they need to upgrade the whole assembly for the turbo fins.

Wow!  That's the first time I've seen that kind of breakage but as I  posted some time ago; Turbo fins have not worked out for me.  My failures have been more mast related and rubber fatigue on the edge of the fins but switching back to the standard fins seems to have fixed my problems.  I have often wondered why all Hobies don't come with Turbo fins. I admit that I have a tendency to "hit" the pedals pretty hard and fast but having to ease into every start just isn't something I'm gonna do.  Standard fins = no problems for me.

Has anyone from Hobie commented?  I can't ever recall hearing of this kind of failure before.  Maybe a bad production run?  Past reliability of everything but the paddles from Hobie has been very good.  The NCKA Hobie fleet is pretty big and if this is a first time situation, I would say the track record has been pretty good.  The "Dark Side" continues to grow and very few failures have been reported.

It makes sense from a physics standpoint that the turbo fins would cause more metal fatigue on the pedals...that sux dude.  I'm gonna stick w/ my standard fins...you mentioned a mast faliure?  I have yet to try my sail kit on my revo, gotta get those inflatable outriggers first, tell us more about your mast faliure..

Different mast.  The mast on the Mirage drive is the rod that holds the drive fins.  They can be bent by striking submerged objects like rocks or doing beach landings without removing the dive.  My mast failure was more of a stress bend, most likely caused by "standing" on the turbo fins.

aahh yes those turbo fins look to be a good six inches longer...hope Hobie makes it right for you...by the looks of the crack and the metal compund, it looks like it'd be a a tough weld.

Haven't upgraded yet as I've been just fine with the standard fins.
Guess I'll just leave well enough alone...

My old V1 fin mast broke right where the pin goes in...fixed that what a V2 upg kit...
