Besides the obvious safety issues already discussed,
I have learned to never go out on big blue alone, something I have done twice before and will never do again :smt009
I don't even want to think of what would have happened if Mike had not been there for a brother :smt010
Safety First my Brothers!
Nice rescue Mike, glad your both OK!

That's one hell of a story...so glad it ended well, that had all the makings of a disaster.  My front hatch seals are shot, I'm thinking it's time for some maintenance.

Yeah me too...there was a lot of kelp...we were north end pretty far out...but  kept getting hung up on kelp and I tried to get him to pull up the drive/rudder he would just keep paddling his freakin heart and soul out...but there were moments where I was hanging on and he was paddling and we were going nowhere... :smt009 finally started  kicking to get through the crap...seemed like days OTW I kept looking up and seemed like we weren't moving at all...

Maybe we should reenact it and see what up...but I'm good with "just remembering it"  A long hold on reality!!!  man that sweet ass Kokatat I'm wanting to get would have been the Bomb!!! Next Big purchase!!! :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 7mm is nice but that would be sooooo muuucchh better!!!

Glad you and Joe are ok. The feeling of bliss you had was a symptom of the beginning of stage 2 hypothermia. Joe was well into stage 2. The problem with hypothermia is that it impairs your judgement so the decision of when to call a pan pan pan becomes more difficult. I never second guess decisions OTW and things worked out ok. This the second unexplained T13 sinking.

I just heard.  You guys ROCK!  When I first met my fishing buddy Nick, he looked like he'd sink like a stone but he's seaworthy and I think a lot about how fishing with the right partner(s) can be worth your life.  I'm pretty sure my days of fishing alone are over.
I've conducted many angler/diver/swimmer/rescues and in my 16 year career in kayak fishing, I've seen a few dozen boats sink.  Sank one myself (the cause was determined to be my STUPIDITY)in Northern Baja and had to be rescued by clients.  Humbling to say the least.

Thanks to Sledge (rescuer credit) and Joe (self rescue credit IMHO) for teaching us all ALOT with the account of their experience that saved their lives and maybe one day, a few of ours.

Besides that extra paddle in the hull, consider a pair of swim fins on the deck.   And a dive hood (I saw an orange one at the dive show awhile back). The "big swim" is one thing.  The COLD big swim is entirely different and scary as hell.  There is a lot to be said about dressing for this sport.

Sledge, Michelle likes Joe and said "Good job, tell Sledge there's a drink waiting for him at The (Valley Ford Hotel) Saloon (wed-Saturday) when he dries out."  I sure she meant your clothes but i did help her convert a vegetarian once.

Thanks to Joe for hosting and to everyone at Red Barn, it was great seeing you all!

I'm gonna guess that the trident was taking on water through the rod pod cover. In fact, i would be willing to bet a six-pack that you can sinch down the straps as tight as you want on any trident rod pod and it would still take on water when the cockpit gets filled from breaking waves. I am really glad you guys are o.k.......p.s... Sledge, who do you think you are kidding???.......you haven't had all your mental capabilities for years  :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 Thats what makes you such a fun guy.
