Thanks for sharing the story, Sledge.  I'm glad you guys are OK.  Flotation is a big deal.  I'm down to pitch in for a new yak for a guy who just put on a major shindig for the group.

Now, Mike, what's this about bliss and being content if you croaked right there?!  OK, I know I probably can't even pull that off - I'm guilty of the same kind of mentality.  Beat it down, Sledge - it doesn't mean you'd be content to die, it means you're really content to be living like you are!  This is what we do:  challenge, share, enjoy, repeat.  This is what we do.   :smt001

next years RBC it should be mandatory everyone have a PFD...No PFD automatic DQ.
I am curious how the FF was mounted so when it was removed there were holes to allow that much water. Having a tough time visualizing it.

I agree Tote no PFD no Fun...who was not wearing one???  someone should give him one or kick his ass back to his truck for his own good...hell I got an old one would have donied!!!

Joe thinks his hatch seals were the culprit cuz that much water that fast was a little freaky...

Glad to hear both made it out. Did you ever call for help from the VHF?

No but could have...I KNEW we were going to make it...if I'd of thought for a moment we were NOT I'd made the call (ch 16) "pon pon" ...that call should only be made if you know your not going to make it, In Willapa WA this yr I almost made that call but help showed up out of the Deep Blue...if it was foggy and we didn't have a clue maybe...but I still had a compus :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

  joe.... you just got SLEDGED!
:smt002 :smt005  shhhhhh don't tell my girlfriend

Did you report the sinking in case it washes up? They won't be looking for someone.

Glad you guys are OK.  Scary story.

Yeah the next day when we looked for his X ride...left info on the rangers shack and also talked with someone that works there...maybe it will hold water with a judge when Joe go's to fight that F'n ticket!!!  personally I think he should just frame it to remember 7mm/pool noodles

:smt009 DOODS!  :smt010 WTF!! Yall have big hearts and bigger balls! Im glad yall stuck together and played like a good team. AND that SLEDGE got that hobie in oregon, instead of getting the better deal in CALI!!! It's a F#$%#ng miracle bro, the world works in mysterious ways.........

Yep I'm glad too...could've saved a few hundy with the Cali deal...but OR deal=life :smt044 :smt044 :smt044  No Doubt that my new Revo saved our lifes!!! my pelcian would not have

Just curious why didn't you use your marine radio to hail for help?

that was vwools question...didn't feel it was needed @ the time...believe me I WOULD HAVE IF NEEDED!!!  what would have been nice is if Alan had a VHF radio...he dosn't  :smt102 :violent1: :smt009  next year he better :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

no more sledging for you!

:thefinger:  J/K bro...Dude if your not wearing a 7mm and you got no noodles in your ride, I'm not Sledging with U :smt002

Took awhile but Joe found them she hid them really well :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 BTW your wife is an excellent artist she should toss some paintings in for the raffel for PIF and the one she was doing when we talked to her would have real meaning for Joe/Me it was such a beautiful sunny day... who knew it would turn into a twilight picture!!!

That landscape painting rocked!!! :smt007

I just want to add clarification here so as not to spread mis-information.  You shouldn't wait until "you know you're not going to make it".  The "pan-pan" call is used to signify that there is an urgency on board a boat, ship, aircraft or other vehicle but that, for the time being at least, there is no immediate danger to anyone's life or to the vessel itself.  It puts the correct authorities on alert, but is not a call for immediate help.

I would not have hesitated to make the call in this situation.  For one, it lets me know my radio is working fine and can contact the CG.  It would also puts the CG on alert in case the situation turns for the worse.  Also, it lets me hear a re-assuring voice on the other end, and lets them give any advise they may have.

Glad you guys made it through but after re-read your post I would have make a "pan-pan" call after saw him close to hypothermia! ( Joe is wearing 3mm   I'm wearing 7 mm  he is already getting slightly hypothermic, starting to get the chills...)
or when "Joe is paddling so hard he starts puking...not good...well 2.5 hrs into it I'm starting to get cold and I ask Joe "what's the limit of time when people die from cold water exposure???".

BTW "A pan-pan call is for a boat that's in danger but not yet in life-threatening trouble.  Sea kayaker and kayak fishermen may sometimes need to make a pan-pan call if they're in trouble and they want nearby boaters to come to their aid. " not "that call should only be made if you know your not going to make it"!
"Life is not about waiting for the storms to pass...it's about learning how to dance in the rain."
