Fun with GoPro video editing
« on: September 18, 2011, 07:14:40 pm »
WARNING: There are NO kayaks, bloody fish or pretty girls in bikinis in this video. Sorry! :smt002

It's just a short time lapse video I edited today. Taken at the west steps of the Capitol.
Still frames taken with a GoPro HD Hero camera set at one frame, every two seconds, for 30 minutes.
The camera was mounted on an Ikea cooking timer to slowly pan across the subject.
Edited with Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11.

Enjoy,
Al

Did you use this?
Or a homebrew setup?

Home brew. Ikea timer $5.99 and one GoPro flat stick on base thingy.

Cheap, easy, professional looking and it's Pug approved.

I had been wanting a timer like that but didn't feel like driving to Ikea...so I ended up with this...

Let's just say the chicks dig my timer.  :smt007

I also made a hole at the bottom to attach it to my tripod but it didn't turn out exactly the way I would have hoped.

I've been working with Windows Movie Maker which pretty much sucks for anything but the most basic of video editing, so I've been thinking of buying a MacBook Pro and Final Cut.

What do you think of the Sony Vegas editor?

I've been working on adding a tripod mount to the bottom. Saw a post where a hole was drilled and a threaded sleeve was inserted. Not sure if I want to go that route. I might try to epoxy a 1/4-20 shoulder nut to the bottom.

A lot of the basic features on Sony Vegas are pretty easy if your familiar with a time line editor. But you can get that stuff with any editor. I wanted a little more than that. I spent a lot of time watching all the training videos on the Sony website to get a feel for what it can do. A couple of the nice features are the Pan/Crop and Keyframe editors. I used these to make the zoom-in, then zoom-out effect on the above video. You can also use these to create a zoom like animation on a still image. Sample attached.

Also, I forgot to mention that the finished video was created using 876 jpg photos.

Really cool!!!

I wish I knew how to do more fancy video editing...I imagine I could buy some fancy software, but I still wouldn't know what to do with it!

Thanks for sharing!!

Awesome!  I've got a kitchen timer that I bought for the same reason but havent found anything time lapse worthy.  All that matters really is that its Pug Approved!  Pugs for Life!
