Maui Activities - Need suggestions
« on: August 24, 2011, 03:22:48 pm »
I've been to Maui five times in the last 11 years, but its been a bit since last visit.  We'll be staying at a Condo near Black Rock.  Already well familiar with Whaler's Village, Mama's Flop House, 7 Sacred Pools, Kaanapali, the ultra light tour.

What do you recommend that we MUST do?

Q1:  Its 2.5 miles from Molokini to Maui.  The guides (http://www.hawaiiweb.com/maui/html/sites/molokini.html) say the crater "can only be reached by boat."  Apparently one advises swimming the 2.5 LOL.  I'm tempted to try depending on how much fitness I can recover the next two weeks.  At good condition (which I am currently not) I'll turn 2 miles ~ 53 mins.  Distance-wise I should be straight, just worried about current, wind, waves, wildlife
Searching for fish I am.
Eat them I will.

I really liked the zip-line tour I did when I was there.  Dont ever ask me to go to Haliakala for the sunrise again though...   :smt013  I snorkeled at Molokini and remember that the wind really kicked up when we were leaving.  Nice spot though i'd rather just float in the water off my hotel than take another trip over there.  The fish were basically all over the PB's, like it was feeding time as soon as we pulled up.  Maybe you could swim out there and try and hitch a ride back from a PB  :smt003

They also rent SOTs along that beach. We stay at the Marriot. Didn't look fishy  but once past the breakers there were tons of fish. Troll or toss out some frozen peas and then put some peas on a barbless hook

I agree that Molokini wasn't that great. We saw way more fish in Turtle Bay, or something like that.

Killer blowhole north of Lahaina - unmarked, seriously deadly, totally cool to cautiously approach.

Io Valley.

Hana then the forbidden side against the rental car rules...

A redwood grove a couple thousand feet up the west side (I think) of the volcano.

Have a great trip!   :smt001
Chasing salmon for the summer, and maybe a halibut too.

last time I was there was 23 years ago.  So my guess is that my advice would be slightly dated  :smt003

Although you will probably just jump in and see some fish, there was a cool Aquarium I visited while there with a cool underwater tunnel.  Think it was free too :)

the kahakili (sp?) highway around the non-hana side of the island is quite an adventurous drive. There are some really cool little beaches along the route. Slaughterhouse beach was actually quite nice despite the name.
We did a day's snorkel just off the highway from Lahaina towards the central valley and saw lots of fish including big parrotfish. We went in when I found a huge shark hook on the reef.

enjoy the island time!

I don't know if you have ever given surfing, stand-up/NOT SUP, a try but with your level of fitness because of all the swimming you do I'm sure you would easily learn and enjoy it as any waterman does. It's really a great way to relax, ride a wave, paddle back out and wait for another one while enjoying the scenery, and not having to wear anything but boardshorts and a rashguard shirt. jim

La Perousse Bay and the Spinner Dolphins is great - go early due to winds.

The Early trip out to Molokini on a small boat is good, before the big boats and the crowds. I'm told that "The Wall" dive there is incredible.

There are some great beaches south of Kehei out dirt roads and are away from the crowds
