Eventually. I will be getting two so I can send one of mine up in the meantime. Historically I sell a lot more SOT than the Redding store for some reason, but I think this boat will appeal to a lot more people. Especially older folks that shy away from a Sit on because the weight.

Calypso - First Splash!

Check out this video of the Calypso SOT from idea to reality. First footage of it on the water. Looks fast and stable. We will have our first demo's the week after Thanksgiving. Can't wait!

Keep us posted Dan about next years lengths. Tim Niemer told me that he might be  making a carbonlite material updated scupper model. That would be so sweet. :smt007

The 10' and 14' will both be out sometime next year. They will be doing the 10' first and taking their time to build the 14' because they want to get tons of feedback. They would like to make the 14' /15' the ultimate ultra light sit on top, so whatever ideas you have please keep me posted so I can relate them to Tom. Meanwhile I just got my first two demo Calypso's and man am I impressed. They are stupid light. Had them out on a short paddle in Washington the other day, and for a 12' kayak I was stoked with how it paddled. Here is the dorky video I shot.

A friend of mine did the first review of the new Calypso. He has some nice photos showing off the features as well as rigging options.
Also congrats to Big Reds wife for buying the first new Calypso. Maybe she will let him borrow it from time to time. :smt003

  • The 14'/15'/(oh please just make it 16') boats, in Carbonlite are not targeted at the beginner. Don't make them too beamy. Plenty of folks love the Scupper Pro, and it's only has a 26" beam. Eddyline knows that too much stability is a mofo in nasty conditions.
  • Cockpit accessible rod storage, for one piece rods to 7' (ala rodpod).
  • Again, as these boats would not be targeted for beginners, don't make them track like they're on rails. Experienced paddlers don't need exaggerated keels, and instead want something that doesn't take an act of Congress to turn without a rudder. There is a happy medium that no one as yet has really hit in the SOT market.
  • Look at the Falcons, then start on the longer boat. Take another look at the Falcons, continue with designing the longer boat
  • There's a lot of beauty in the original T160 design. Sure, they're a wet ride, but the low deck height makes it easy to sit sidesaddle, and doesn't have a lot of windage
  • I'm in the 1% here, but a dual hatch version would be mandatory for me in order for me to purchase.
  • Now, for my .01% request - a skeg option would be awesome.

As for my background: Paddling since '94, and started fishing from that Necky Arluk II that year. I've owned and/or currently own: Arluck II, Looksha II kevlar, Looksha IV kevlar w/skeg, Scupper Pro, Scupper DH, T160 DH, Necky Jive for WW, OK Prowler 15. I've spent on average $500/year for kayak hulls new or used since 2000. Would happily pay up to $2500 for a boat designed for Northwest conditions, not TX/FL/GA conditions. For years, I've hoped that Eddyline would enter the fishing SOT market with such a boat.

Wow the Calypso is awesome. I'm going to get one in the next year or 2. The construction and finish are great as is the design.  If you have a bad back like me, check it out.
