Another Hobie Adventure Island maiden voyage
« on: April 22, 2011, 08:08:10 pm »
SteveS scored a sweet deal on used Hobie AI this morning.  Right after picking it up, Steve called me and we met at the Alameda Rockwall for his maiden voyage and to try halibut trolling.  The wind started blowing and it was a good opportunity to see how these AI's handle typical bay conditions.

Wow... these things are fun!!!.... so much fun that fishing took a back seat today.

Back at the ramp, I met a new NCKA'er named Jared "JROD" who had a nice Hobie Outback.  He told me that he won it at last years ISE Show/Hobie/WOLF 95.7 radio station promo.  I knew that Outback looked familar.  It was the same boat that the Mooch and I delivered to the San Francisco radio station.  It's sure nice to know that good guys do win giveaway contests.

Here's a short unedited video clip and a few pics back at the ramp.

Sweet!  2 more red AI's in the Bay Area?  That's 4 including Rudy's and mine.  You guys don't look like rookies sailing them AI's.

Let me know when you guys go out on a run again.  Did you guys get pretty wet out there without the skirts?

Oh yeah.... I got splashed.  I was prepared.  I wore my Kokatat drysuit. :smt003  After today's run, I really want to get a spray skirt or trampoline.

Rey... I'll be contacting you for our next hook-up.

I see those amas really come in handy.
Looks like I may have to invest in a kit.

All I need is an AI sail kit for my red Adventure to join the club.

Nice ride, Chuck and Steve. Pretty splashy, huh. Trampoline makes good sense. Very cool vid.

Way to go Chuck. Looks like fun on the Bay.

The only way I can avoid "sailing fever" is to not bring the sail!

Last couple of trips to Berry (tonight included) for crappie I just pedal around in a strange looking craft (everything minus the sail). Too lazy to take off the tramps etc.  Plenty of room for lights and stuff though for night fishing.

I will be surrounded by a fleet of red in my papaya AI if I venture to the Bay.  I definitely need a drysuit asap. I have splash gear but it won't cut it in that kind of cold chop.

Great video.

Karl

It was a BLAST...

all i can think of now is how much wider my fishing zones are than before. Not only with the pedals ( nice easy "spin" at about 3mph in that tank), but the sail...oh the sail...OHHHH OHHH sail...wind is my friend now! and not in that nasty ugly way like it builds strength and character.

Actually hardcore fishing from the thing is gonna be a trip-not sure how it works for landing a hot 25# king, but i am jazzed to figure it out

You guys looked like your were crusing at a fairly good speed!  What about the fishing?  Or did ya just tear up the bay?

I have to post up my maiden voyage soon.  I wanted to make it seem like I knew what I was doing so I started to lean in the opposite direction to balance out the yak.  :smt044  I went from Tidewater to the Smelt bridge in no time with minimal effort.

Are you guys naming your yaks? I'm hoping that iroelikethat has another mynameislikethat batch.  The wife came up with this... hobebryant!  :smt003  Mine is "Gold" and I need to add some purple to it to balance it out (purple sprayskirt?).

BTW, Rudy's buddy, John, has a papaya one as well.

Sorry to threadjack, but since i already have the Adventure, does Hobie sell just the outrigger and sail? On the Hobie website, i only see the small ama sail kit for sale as an accessory, but not the large outrigger you see on the AI.

Peace, y'all

John,

Hobie makes complete sail conversion kits for the Adventure (2007 and newer) kayak.

You get a color match for the hibiscus (red), Papaya (yellow) and also for the new dune color. I think they go for around $1600-1800 dollars.

You get the daggerboard, oversized sailing rudder, hardware, lines etc. All the candy  :smt007

The weight goes from 62 pounds for the Adventure to 115 pounds for the fully rigged Adventure Island in sail mode.
