Yeah, it says, "Dude, that's a gnarly wave.......totally!"  :smt003

Actually I have Japanese friend that I'll ask - unless someone else gets to it first.

I've got a friend here at work who is japanese and while he has lived here most of his life he has stayed fluent in japanese.

He says it looks like the translation came from an automated tranlsator like maybe Google and perhaps it could be phrased better.

He also pointed out that while it's a great sentiment, only people who can read japanese will understand it.

And that is some beautiful work there

Here's how a native speaker would say it:
東日本大震災で被災された人々のために = For the Victims of Earthquake in Japan

東日本大震災 = Massive Earthquake in North Part of Japan
But I think simply say “Earthquake in Japan” is good enough. We just say 東日本大震災.

Thanks for the input Dale from a Japanese view. I am changing it back to English so my intent is clear to all.

I like the artwork... I think it's really cool & something I'd love to wear myself.
I like the message... it's a nice tribute and fitting since we're so tied to the ocean.

However, I personally don't feel the two belong together.

It's a bit of an odd juxtaposition between picture and text.  Are the kayakers supposed to be in danger & facing perishing themselves?  If the kayakers are just having fun fishing... it seems awkward to compare their situation of fun sport to the tragedy of the tsunami.  Even if they are in danger... it's trivial when compared to the devastation Japan suffered.

For NCKA, the ocean is a playground; a place we go for enjoyment and relaxation.  For the Japan tsunami victims, the ocean is a source of death and destruction.  Combining the two with an image of kayakers on monster waves... leads to a very mixed message.

Craig, I have the utmost respect for you & your work on this event.
I also know the intent is very noble... but I think it should be set up differently.

Thanks Harold. Actually the wave and the kayakers(that used to be japanese fishermen) is from a japanese wood block print from 1760. The Albion stuff was put in the background of the original print. Also the design was in progress as of last December. The transition from a sketch to a workable form for silk screening came the day of the tsunami. Can you believe it? The text below the art work was added after the fact. The artists name is Katsushika Hokusai.

You are right Brent! Heres the original. It is supposed to honor a great artist from Japan and all our connection to the ocean. I worried and worried after the tsunami that this might offend some. I am staying true to my original intent and to also honor those who suffered and paid the ultimate price. We are all connected through tragedy and joy.

Craig, your heart is in the right place...what ever you come up with will honor the ocean, fisherman, and anyone connected to all seas.
