I sold my river/creek boat (mini-x) to make room for some new plastic.
Unfortunately the new plastic isnt another "creeker", so I am going to have to get creative.
I had thought about using my "special lady friend's" Tarpon 120. It would probably be fine for rivers BUT I want to fish higher/ steeper creeks and a T120 is not the right tool for the job. (the mini-X really wasnt either)
I started thinking that if I want to fish steeper, why not use the right tool?
So now Im planning to convert my 75 gallon river runner into a fishing boat.
The rod holder will be simple but Im considering a drift anchor system.

Heres where Im interested in what the NCKA  "think tank" has to offer for ideas.

The drift anchor system will need to contain almost 0 metal.(except for the anchor of course).
Id like it to be low profile yet high enough that the anchor clears the water.
Right now im leaning towards a cutting board foundation and possibly the removable Scotty anchor system like Bird is using. Im very open to alternative ideas though, as long as they are light and hopefully tested.
Has anyone ever seen a WW kayak outfitted for stream fishing? or even better is anyone fishing like this?
Im also wondering how folks with WW experience feel about paddling a WW kayak with some weight hanging off the stern. Before I started fishing rivers on anchor I wouldve said "no way", but after using a drift system, Im now a believer that its the best way to really fish moving water.

Almost forgot, before someone brings it up
the Jackson Coosa isnt an option for me right now,but If the demo goes well, you may be seeing atleast 1 of the Team Bridgeport posse paddling it this year in creeks/rivers.

anyway, thanks in advance for your ideas and help

Custom carbon/composite tube baby! Maybe a old paddle as a donor......Hmmmmmm....

Brilliant!!
thanks Mark. that is sending me down a much better path of thinking.
The tube concept will solve a few of the issues I was concerned with. Now im thinking that a chain style anchor would be more appropriate than the pyramid style. Im hoping a chain anchor can be brought all the way up and into the shaft of the tube. Then nothing will be hanging out and none of the anchor will be in the water. The tube will also allow for the low profile style I was hoping for.
Im planning on strapping a 10# barbell weight to the back of the boat for some performance testing this week.
Then Ill learn if any of this is even practical.
thanks again Mark

Its snowing here today so I decided not to do my planned performance test, so its going to be a day tinkering in the kayak lab.
Had a few request for pictures of the boat Im working on to help visualize how challenging it may be to attach weight and structures to a boat like this.

this is a F'ing awesome project, I have been thinking about a creek boat for ages, but....A) This kind of fishing IS NOT A SOLO ACTIVITY and B) you are the first I have seen get serious about a creek fishing boat.

Please keep us posted, I would happily buy a used play boat and convert if the fishing potential was appropriate (need to justify having a 6th boat at home)...

Man that rear handle really throws a curveball in the design I was thinking.

Agreed at first sight, but the cross-bar style of it could be incorporated  as a two point mount...a flat bar, 1/4 x 3 or so, starting forward of the handle, with a bolt attached to the hull and welded to a new piece of alum'n serving instead of the OEM handle over the scoop and then a bend up for anchor clearance could work.

Sheesh, I need something to draw on......

thanks for the thoughts and I can almost see (in my minds eye) what your suggesting but I cant see the attachment. may be operator error on my part.

Im also thinking of incorperating the handles but using all 3 as attachment points for a detachable drift system.
Im working in the lab today practicing my plastic welding skills. Im hoping to try and construct a system made of no metal and will not require any holes to be drilled into a boat that still needs to be used in WW and surf when im not fishing.

thanks for the ideas and support guys

Very interesting project...I'm paying attention.
even if I never use the info it is so cool to see something completely different!
you are pushing the envelope out, NICE!

John, I can see your sketches now. Nicely done, but Im going to try and make the tube concept work.

Its still pretty cold here so Im still procrastinating on testing with weight on the boat. I did manage a solid day of brainstorming on this and a few other projects.
There are still a ton of problems to solve.
Im still not sure where im going to keep the excess rope for the anchor.
Maybe a throw bag style holder?  and it could be stashed in a compartment that will also act as the foundation for the tube?? hmmmm
There cant be much friction on the rope for smooth ops and I dont think the rope will stay on a pulley.
Getting the chain anchor to easily drop after being in the shaft might be challenging as well, especially after the chain has been gorilla taped.
uhg   work in progress

Here is a picture of the 3 points that I have to work with and a quick concept with parts in the lab.

Hoping for just a little sunshine so I get it in the water, but right now we are enjoying whats left of the snow

The tube sounds good for chain to trolley in- will there be a proper anchor of sorts attached to the chain? A muffler tubing or 4x4 cage bender/fabricator could make some sample bends/profiles for you prior to laying up something in composites...

Jhfish,
no proper anchor, just a heavy chain wrapped in gorilla tape or sheathed in a piece of bike tire.

The land of the lost is frozen and Im not getting in the water.
This project cant go any further until I know I can roll with a 10 pound weight on the back.
but
the team is assembling

Experienced whitewater kayaker here and ACA Level IV whitewater kayaking instructor...

Make sure you can wet exit and roll that boat (with a 100% bombproof combat roll) with all the kit that is getting mounted on it.  If not, you will die.  Excess rope and moving water = drowning.

When I am fishing moving water I keep it very simple as I don't want to die.  I use one of my regular whitewater boats (Jackson 4Fun or Superhero), a shitty Bass Pro Shops telescoping rod that I can strap inside the yak between my legs, and when I want to fish I catch an eddy.

I would not want to be anchored unless I was in a sit on top.

So far, the set up I see being constructed and discussed is a drowning machine.  Have fun but be very careful...  :smt004
