My in-laws saw it and recommended it but I don't get to the movies all that often.  It's on my list to rent.

kudos to him for being so brave in his ordeal, but and this is my opinion what a moron, he went against every rule and didn't tell any one where he was going and had no real set plans, i know we all have done it gone some where and it sucked so we change plans but when s**t goes bad it goes real bad and quick, some one always need to know a general area where you will be and when you will get back, sorry but i had camped and back pack and climbed, and i always let some one know a general time. I hope other people take his miss fortune as a grime reminder you always need a buddy or some one waiting for a call. Other wise i am glad the movie was good, i read some of the book and it was real good.

Yup, I don't think I would be able to do what he did :smt009

Agreed, Moral of the story, tell some one where your going and when you will be back :smt002

At least this story had a happier ending than "Into The Wild" :smt001

Yeah, I kinda agree. But, pushing the "maximum cool" in any pastime is when you get into trouble. I'm pretty conservative when I'm out alone these days. A "float plan" would have been a big help to him.
I'm happy for him that he had the will to live. I hope I never have to cut my arm off to stay alive.

I have 3 pair of "last forever" leather sandals that were made by a guy in SoCal that went through the same experience when his arm was trapped under his van. He was on his way to surf when he got sideswiped and his van rolled off one of the LA freeways into a wooded median. He was there for almost 3 days until a CalTrans worker happened to be curious about the debris & investigated.
The sandalmaker lost his arm, but learned to surf without it, and rebuilt his sandalmaking bench to operate with one hand. Kiwi sandals are the name, his family took over the production when he retired. Best slaps I've ever had.

Did not see the movie yet but did see the 2 hour interview on Dateline NBC with Tom Brokaw.

my 2 cents...

I do admire the fact that Ralston did what he could to survive. But he's definitely a good example of what not to do when your "adventuring" by yourself. Like Piscean had mentioned, "leave a float plan"

....but I'm just curious about what he would have done or what would have happened IF he did not have that knife/multi tool.

Saw it about a week ago.  Good flick and good story.  I think the movie was pretty honest about the fact that he was being an idiot for getting into that situation without anyone knowing where he was or when he'd return, etc.

It's an issue that transcends outdoor sports whether it be canyoneering, kayak fishing, etc.... nature will expoit your vulnerabilities if given the chance.  The movie should give all of its viewers pause to consider some of the basic safety principles that we all can tend to become complacent about.

Kz said it pretty well. Water follows the path of least resistance. Just like that fact is a given, Nature will exploit your weaknesses, regardless of who you are, maybe even if you did leave a float plan.
I've yet to see this movie.
