Tote,
We have had the same experience. Bud and Coors bottles and or cans, by far, out weigh any other container. They are usually found in groups too. imagine that.
DaleL,
youve probably figured out by now that we were on the SanJuaquin river and yes it is slow and "safe" in those pictures. The river does have areas of moving water where you need to be paddle in hand and using the skills.
Lots of strainers. The Kraken and I are going to put together a "best of SJR" post and we will share some pictures of those areas.
Z,
We find balls in just about every waterway we haunt and when its a Team Bridgeport event, its game on.
Once a ball is found you must be at the ready at all times, even if you have a fish on. The further and more difficult the throw the better and of course we are aiming for the face. The only consolation for getting hit is that now you have the ball and its time for some payback. good times on the water.

I just wanted to add to this thread and show the true heroes of the SJR.
The RiverTree volunteers  http://www.rivertreevolunteers.org/
The have removed over 5376 tires and counting.
Here are a few pictures of their works, both inspirational and tragic.
Im challenging myself to take a tire out everytime I make this drift and hope others can do the same in their waters.

GD!  Who would have that you could paddle a fridge.   :smt044

Those pics are inspiring.  I'm bringing my pick up stix to the beach and after my morning run gonna fill a bag with left behind bs.

Holy moly, the stuff that we find in waters/beaches are unbelievable! Thank you and everyone who makes a concerted effort to keep our sanctuary clean :D

I think it should be in everyone's objectives (besides having fun with our members and catching fish) to include leaving the area cleaner than how we arrived to the area.

Thanks everyone for doing their part in keeping our waters/oceans/forests clean!

Just found this thread, how cool!  Here's my contribution, Thanksgiving morning, Sac River in Redding.  Planned to get a couple hours of fly fishing in, instead collected 514 golf balls in less than two hours.  And my own Keystone cans... :smt001

Any golfers out there?

i don't even want to ask where the h--- that is, beenfishin.  Any place that's going to collect that many loose balls.. you might as well be standing in the middle of a driving range with hockey pads and a kevlar plated full face motorcycle helmet LOL.

While I've never been beaned, I've seen it happen at Pebble SWS.  A ball hit my wife in the back of her left knee as we were, you guessed it, shagging balls on the beach LOL.  Some cheesed--k a-hole with one helluva slice shanked it waaaaaay out there, unfortunately in our direction.  After hearing the "WAP" noise, it was like watching a baby who just fell from a chair, you know, when they start tearing up but only start wailing after they realize "Oh Crap, this hurts!!"  :smt044.  Even funnier, the ball was imprinted with the name of one of the sponsors of the charity event that was going on - Mayer Brown.... a LAW FIRM!   :smt044  true story.

Oh the joys and perils of shagging loose balls...

I just started with you guys and I can't be more impressed. The more I read the more I'm impressed. I can't wait to meet up with a few of you For a fishing trip.  I to have always picked more garbage than I bring but never spent time looking for it. I love the idea and will look for it harder.

ha ha, no worries, the river actually has a golf course on each side, this spot was downstream about 300 yards, well out of the impact zone!  these were pulled from the shallows, probably a few thousand more that i didn't bother to reach in deeper water.  all those poor salmon with insufficient spawning gravel...i'm thinking those country clubs are gonna have to pony up for restoration costs! :smt002

I would think those golf course would have to be responsible to cleaning up that mess.  Care to say which courses they are and mind if we send some of your pics back to them?

Well I went on my first San Joaquin River trip of the year on Saturday and I had a pretty good time. Unfortunately, after going through the first 1/3 of my 8.4 mile trip I still hadn't gotten a fish or even a bite yet. I decided to get out of the yak and come up with a new game plan. I headed to a bank that had a few cans and I thought I'd do some cleanup. I get out and there's cans everywhere! I guess when the river was at 7000 cfs (current flow was at 200 cfs), it pushed all the cans up and over the bank. So basically in about 15 minutes I filled my boat with cans (and Wilson) and I was ready to get back to fishing.

I'm not sure if the river was rewarding me or not, but a short while after that I hook my first fish and just miss bringing in a nice trout. A few casts later I do bring in a beautiful fat +15” trout. That made my day and landing it with my little trout pole and 4 LB test is always a lot of fun. Later, I grab a can out of the water and it starts to rattle. I check it out and there's a good sized crayfish inside. I decide to get him out and have a look at him and he goes in to full “battle mode” with claws raised (I love these guys). I ended the day with one more nice 12” trout. I let all fish go to get bigger.

It wasn't the massive fishing day I had hoped for, but the little things like the river cleanup and the crayfish make for another interesting day on the river.

kastmaster strikes again.

Nice report on the instant karma, Kraken!

Remember, cans are 5 cents a pop, and larger bottles 10!  Don't let the recyclers go by weight or they screw you over.
