Sunday Morning in the Blind
« on: September 15, 2010, 10:56:54 am »
Bob and I were lucky enough to hook up with a Petaluma sheep farmer with a coyote problem. He has 60 acres out near Tomales.

Bob and I headed out on a Saturday morning and set up a quick and dirty blind, then him, our friend Jeff, and I took my Spitfire predator call out there the next morning.

As expected, we didn't see any predators because we had just disturbed the natural habitat the day before, but we did learn a lot and were able to call in some crows with my call.

I think we even freaked out a mother house cat 400 yards away. I played the female bobcat in heat sound a few times and out of nowhere, all of a sudden there is a big cat on the trail 400 or 500 yards away from us. We thought it was a bobcat at first, but then we saw the tail. Not sure if it was because of the call or not, but she went to work moving her kittens from one hiding spot under a log to another spot in some thick bushes.

Anyway, we might head back out there this week-end if it isn't raining and give it another shot.

Pics to follow, I just realised they are on my disk at work and I don't feel like re-typing all of this!!

Definitely! Are the ground squirrels still up?

I know up at Fort Bidwell they all go back underground from about mid-August 'til around March, or so.

Mooch chasing real animals, I think anything larger than a housecat might spell disaster for him...you just stick to ground squirrel and woodchucks there buddy.
