What do you do and how did you get there?

I HATE what I do.  I am brainstorming, trying to decide what I want to do and how I am going to get there.  My background is in aviation maintenance, I have a bachelors degree, but I want to do something completely different.  It seems like everything I like requires more college, or starting at the very bottom.  I don't mind that, but I also have to consider the fact that I have a wife and kid, and can't afford to quit what I am doing to work at REI for 10 bucks an hour.

Thanks in advance.

Just so you get an idea of how much I hate what I do, I constantly think about the movie office space.  I dream of knocking down my cubicle, cleaning a fish at my desk, and ignoring my boss...  Then reality kicks in and I think about rent, groceries, diapers,........... :smt044

I'm one of those who loves what he does for a living.  Getting here was kind of a happy accident... it sort of picked me.  I was on my way towards one career and unknowingly took a turnoff that lead me to where I am.

I really love what I do but I don't always love where I do it at or the people I do it with.  When that happens it's usually time for me to sit back and think about whether its really the place/people or if it's me just being restless.  Things might be slightly better in some places but for the most part everyone goes through some crappy times no matter their career, the place they work, or the people they work with.

Can't say I LOVE my job, but it is stable and secure and most days I feel like I am helping people and that my efforts and energies are worthwhile.

I work for the Federal Government (Social Security). If you have no interest in working for the feds, cool, but if you do AND you decide to go back to get your Master's you should check out the Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program.

Five years after I got my Bachelor's I went back to school to get my Master's in Social Work on nights and weekends while working 60+ hours a week...so it is possible...and I will pay off my loans from both programs one day!!  :smt005

https://www.pmf.opm.gov/

Basically PMF is a program that you apply for in the last year of your Graduate studies...if you become a "finalist" they invite you to this big job fair in DC where all the Fed agencies are there recruiting...I did 12 interviews in 2 days and ended up taking a job with the Forest Service in Idyllwild doing Partnership work (community collaboration around land management decisions), but the wife hated it down there so I transferred agencies and still managed to finish the PMF program and get a permanent job with SSA where my family needed to be.

The PMF program varies from agency to agency, but the basic requirements are that the agency give you a 2 year appointment with 80+ hours of formal training, multiple rotations/details in different components, and then a permanent job at the end.

I am not a genius, nor the most studious or straight edge guy....both agencies I worked for had minimal background checks which was probably a good thing!!  :smt002

I just kept on jumping through the hoops and walking through doors as they opened and it seems to have worked out pretty good...

If you want to talk about the PMF program or working for SSA feel free to shoot me a PM.

Keep your head up bro and remember that the important things in life are your health, family and friends...all the rest of the stuff seems huge, and can get overwhelming, but at the end of the day it is really nowhere as important....

Sincerely,

Jim

haha, is it that bad?  I assumed that JB is a good company to work for.

My background is in aviation, but I currently work for a company that overhauls industrial gas turbine engines.

Live today for tomorrow's sake.
We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.

That's awesome!!  Nice to hear about someone who enjoys what they do.  I will figure it out sooner or later.
