Fishing around Bird Rock?
« on: August 04, 2010, 06:05:18 pm »
I am jonesing for some Salmon fishing and wanted to head to the coast tomorrow to give it a try. Looking at the "Closure map" gives me a headache. Can someone tell me if we can fish around Bird Rock? I've seen posts that show party boats getting their limits right there, but I'm still confused. HHHHEEEEELLLLPPPP MMMEEEE!
Want to launch at Doran Beach and paddle out and mooch for a hog or two. Can I??? Or where else? Got any ideas? Want to go along?

Here's the area you're talking about, inside the redline you can't take anything, inside the blue line it looks like you can troll for salmon but NOT mooch, outside the lines it's open.  The listing below is for the blue lined zone and it says troll, which means you can't do anything else.

Bodega Head State Marine Conservation Area
JPEG Chart | PDF Map

38° 18.00' N. lat. 123° 03.64' W. long.;
38° 18.00' N. lat. 123° 08.08' W. long.; thence southward along the three nautical mile offshore boundary to
38° 13.34' N. lat. 123° 03.51' W. long.; and
38° 17.93' N. lat. 123° 03.51' W. long.

Permitted/Prohibited Uses: Take of all living marine resources is prohibited EXCEPT:

1.The recreational take of pelagic finfish* by trolling, Dungeness crab by trap and market squid by hand-held dip net.
2.The commercial take of pelagic finfish* with troll fishing gear or seine, Dungeness crab by trap, and market squid by round haul net.

Now see how simple that was,   :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

I just happen to know about some of this stuff it's damn complicated these days, but what ya gonna do?

Correct me if I'm wrong but the 'Bird Rock' that the pb's have been catching some salmon off of is the one off the NW end of Point Reyes.

I read those coordinates, but in real speak, wtf does it mean?
And so now we can't even mooch for salmon? Life is unfair. I hate this crap. I've been fishing for too long to have it all go to Hell. Might have to move back to Washington where there ARE fish and they let you fish for them. GEEZ!!!

It doesn't show on the crappy map in the link i attached but Craig is right and if you're down there near it you're in water where trolling and mooching is OK.

Man what a trip though,

Sorry to hijack...

it is because CA DFG doesn't have a clue what it is doing nor why it is doing it. It has been over run with bureaucratic bozos bent on keeping "power".

It is one of the MAIN REASONS I'm moving to Salem Oregon next month. I'm fed up with this state!!!

I started looking 6 months ago for a house for my mom, and found a great house for ME in Salem, 3/2, 2 car garage 1550 sq ft WITH a 20'x24' cabinet shop in back yard that has a wood stove, and toilet and sink... all for $155k. I moved my mom into a 3/2 2car garage house about 3 miles away for $140k. She moved from La Jolla to Salem. She paid CASH for her house with $$$ left over, and can live well on just SSI and her pension $$$ she has laid away up there, in La Jolla it would have been a struggle.

I can't wait until my escrow closes! I am counting the days (38 to be exact)

I started noticing that ALL of my friends from college and my career life had moved to Oregon,...Roseburg, Sun River, Sweet Home, Estacada, Madras, Astoria, Junction City... my dad retired to Brookings about 12 years ago, my youngest brother moved to Forks Wash. on the Olympic Peninsula 3 years ago, my other brother has moved in and out of Oregon, Nevada and Ca for the last 10 years, spending more time out of CA than in, I figure...

WHY STAY HERE??? The fishing and hunting is better in Oregon, while setting up my mom's house in Salem 2 weeks ago I added up the SALES TAX I WOULD HAVE SPENT IN LOWE'S- $55 saved, gas is .20-.30 cents cheaper EVERY GALLON, the roads are smoother, the road side rest areas are beautiful, not the dumps we have here, people are friendlier, property taxes are LOWER (less than half of what I am paying here, and Oregons Fish and WIldlife dept really serves the people, not the bureaucracy.
