Trinidad harbor 7-24-10
« on: July 24, 2010, 08:55:59 pm »
My dad, a friend of mine and I went to Trinidad today to spend the day on the water, hopefully kill a couple fish and enjoy the day...  The catching was slow but between the three of us we produced 3 green lings, 3 brown rock fish, and one black... My friend hooked up with a 30 inch 8+ lb green ling, i didn't quite match him but i did hit the 5+ lb mark.  We were using a white scampi on a 1 ounce bullet head jig hammering the bottom.  The conditions were nice for a day on the water, minimal wind, calm seas, and moderate temperatures (for the area) i have pictures of the fish, just no time to post them maybe tomorrow... all in all, a good day on the water

You're right fishin... atleast that's the rule around this house... i went out again yesterday, mostly for the crab, pulled up large numbers in my rings, but i have a feeling a majority of the larger crab have already been harvested... anyway... here are the pics as promised lol... it was my first legit fish in my yak... i caught a couple small hatchery fish that were dumped in fish lake.... those don't count thou lol... anyway my fish is the one on the right in both pics... good sized greens thou

Nice fish. Catch any legal crabs? My son and I have not been outside any bays and plan to drive over to 299 and try Trindad for our first. Maybe crab and fish. Any advice for the newbies? Thanks for the pics!

i caught 6 legal crab... i don't eat them... just a weird fascination with catching them... i have friends who eat them... and nothing brings friends together like crabs  :smt044.... i used the green heads for bait the next day... they were definitely interested in the carcass... i got out to 45 to 50 feet of water and dropped my rings... i was pulling anywhere from 7 to 12 crab every 20 mins... most were too small... the only problem is that the season on the crab ends in 5 days...

ps... i'm pretty much a noooooooob too

All right, you've redeemed yourself!  Nice lings too!  I've heard not to use them for crab bait though, since they love eating crabs, the crabs tend to avoid them.  Not sure if that's BS or not, but kinda makes sense to me.  Pic attached is from Memorial Day last year, soaked for 4 hours while I fished Flat Iron, felt like a money string on Deadliest Catch!  I'm hoping to make it over in the next couple of weeks, will post a hookup if I do so we can all get out there.

sounds good... i don't have a set schedule... but work is slow right now... since i bought this thing, i've been obsessed and looking for people to fish with... still pretty new to the kayaking... so i pick an choose my days carefully... i don't know too much about crabbing... i figured it was cheap bait and a good excuse to get back out on the water... i just use your standard throw rings...  so i have to check them pretty regularly... i was getting pretty good numbers thou... i was surprised... anyway i'm still lookin to kill more fish... so let me know if you make it to town...

Sounds like you're doing things right, it's real easy to get in over your head especially if flying solo.  i'll check my WAF account tonight, but i think the 13-15th might be in the cards.

OK prowler 15.  bought it used, so far, I love it... get to go fishing more often... I went out again last weekend and caught 7 in 2 hours... my other hobby is Mixed Martial Arts, I had a date with a black eye i couldn't miss... but the seas were just too good to pass on... plus more fish is just another reason to have some fam and friends around for another fish fry.  still a little over cautious some times... partly because I'm a chummin' fool when the swells get a little out of hand... I really would like to chase shark and halis in the bay thou... i'm kinda new to the saltwater gig so it's all a learning experience... one that so far has been a lot of fun...
