CAPITOLA — The Capitola Wharf was abuzz Tuesday with talk of a great white shark sighting, but authorities have not been able to confirm the report.

Fishermen told Capitola police at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday that two great white sharks — one that was 19 to 20 feet long and a much smaller one — swam around their boat just beyond the kelp line, according to Capitola Police Sgt. Darrell Harrison.

The animal services officer the fishermen spoke with contacted city lifeguards out of concern for the Junior Guards in the area, Harrison said.

"We're taking the precautionary measures," Harrison said. "Our lifeguards didn't see anything, but we're keeping an eye out."

The Junior Guards were notified of the sighting, although it has not been confirmed, Harrison said. The beach will stay open, he said.

Frank Ealy, owner of Capitola Boat and Bait, said there also were reports of a shark sighting on Friday or Saturday.

Great white shark researcher Sean Van Sommeran said the report of a shark in the area is not strange, but a larger and smaller shark traveling together would be unusual.

"A smaller shark wouldn't typically follow a bigger shark because it may get attacked," he said.

Van Sommeran added that it is the season for basking sharks, which are often mistaken for great whites.

With all the bait swimming around that area, I wouldn't be surprised that the sharks are around. During the Pay it forward paddle, Angel and I saw a 6 foot Thresher jump clear out to the water TWICE - just about 50 yards behind Sean 's (Piscean) kayak. This was around the Santa Cruz pier.......

Sledge and I were told that at the end of last week a bait boat came through and cleaned out the area. While we were fishing Sunday, at the edge of the kelp, we saw two dolphins cruising around. They would take off real fast. Looked like they were chasing something around. We guessed it was baitfish. Sledge tried to catch some small bait to striper fish, but had very little luck. If there was a GWS out there, I think I'm glad I didn't see it. I'll stick to lakes and rivers thank you.
