So Bummed...

Spent 3 years figuring this place out and was really looking forward to a Great Year picking up Hali's in my Backyard, but No more....   :smt009

It appears that Long ago, a pesticide Co freely used DDT making it's product, back in the day when it was deem safe to bathe in, as well as eat...

Even though it has been a focused super fund clean up, fish in the inner Richmond Harbor are turning up with " Much Higher " levels of DDT than the Bay itself.

 It appears, Really Unsafe Levels....

I guess ya could take your chances being it is on the outside of the Harbor, and Bay fish are toxic anyway, but when they say the fish are worse when coming from this area...

 Must be bad JuJu....

 Bummed.....  So Long Richmond   :smt010

Ouch, the worse kind of news.  We grew up thinking that the goverment we were paying with our taxes would never endanger us knowingly.

At least there's still some AOTY points to be had!...   :smt002

Sorry to hear that about your backyard, Bro.  In our lifetime we'll see some bad shit go down, but at least we'll see some efforts to make things better here and there, and we can be part of those.

Keep up the good work, Brother Don.   :smt001

I guess, I'm glad I saw the report tonight...

Maybe it's a bit overdone, and the news never hypes anything up....  :smt011

Many places are more toxic than others, Tomalas bay with Mercury, SF Bay itself,
Delta PCB's,

I guess just pick your poison....

But this place is dead to me now, my wife saw the report too....   :smt012

The bay is nasty. Both richmond and berkeley dumped all garbage in the bay. The bay was the dump for many years. I think they called the sanitary landfill.

Seen it on the news last night, instantly thought of your reports.

Hali's are migratory fish, I'd still eat em.....in moderation.  I wonder what kind of fish they were testing, I can see high levels in bottom feeders and fish that hang in teh area.  Bass and halibut don't really hang in the same places all year absorbing or eating the stuff.  However, if you care to divulge everything you learned about the spot I'm all ears  :smt003

"You can eat them. But you can't eat too much of it, you know?" said Florez.

Very informative.  Can't argue with that kind of investigative reporting.

That sucks Don,
that report also bums me out...our backyard fishin hole!! :smt010Didn't see the report until this mornin however, heard the commerical build up saying that a "certain industry cleaned the toxics up before....NOW THEY'RE BACK!!!" Sucks to find out it's Richmond...again. However, it's always been a manufacturing town so Im not surprised what's found and where.
As with the entire bay, I try to practice C&R 99% of the time...when I'm catching :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 I don't see any harm in continuing to fish the Richmond shoreline, just make sure to bring a camera. :smt003

Just think about the lead paint and "other" stuff that sluffs off the mothball fleet.

The fact is there are very few places that are considered 'safe' Mercury from the gold rush, Chemicals from factories old and new, run off from every gutter in the bay, oh the list goes on.  There have been recent studies that say the benefits of eating fish outweigh the risks. And for most fish the heavier concentrations of containments are located near fins and belly (so fillet all fist) .. And of course there is always catch and release.
Sorry that you lost your fishing spot ...
