Port of Sacramento report

Fished the Port of Sacramento from the barge canal access this morning and had a pretty good time.  Got on the water ~6:30 and for the most part paddled on a sheet of glass.  Ended up boating 3 schoolie sized striper all caught on a green and white clouser.  Got off the water around 10.  All in all a great morning.

Some observations:

- Never experienced a striper boil until today.  Me likey!
- Got up the courage to try using an anchor for the first time.  Now I know, once you go anchor, you don't go back (or forward for that matter!)
- Fly fishing is a fun way to hook up with the fish, but I got killed by a bunch of dudes dropping sardines to the bottom.  Cool guys (even offered me a beer!) and I'm glad they did well.  I think the count was up to 40 when I left them.
- Homemade PVC carts are the bomb... once you glue all the connections together.  Got to the top of the ramp and dumped my yak when the cart decided to go to pieces.  Gear everywhere.

Nice report, what kind of rod/line setup do you use? I've been wanting to try my luck up that way for a while.

I used a 7 wt. rod with a Type VI sinking line.  Then just a 6' leader around 3x.  With this size of the fish being caught you could probably go with a lighter rod.  I also tried a popper on top to hopefully entice an LMB to come out and play, but no luck.  Not sure if this is a workable strategy in this area, but one can hope!

I fish there often, take a sixe 8 clouser, and cast into the pilings, there are a lot of crappie in there certain times of the year.  The bigger stripers are down around the corner from the turning basin.  Those boils out there are insane sometimes!  I like to drift a jumbo minnow off a rod, then cast and retrieve or flyfish while waiting for take downs.
