Haven't seen it posted and wanted to help spread the love.

Saturday June 19th (the day before Father's Day) Kayak Connection is holding a derby out of Moss Landing.

Here is the link.

How is it a kayak derby when power boats can enter also?

It's hosted at the yacht club but I'm pretty sure it is just a kayak derby.

According to a lady I talked to at Kayak Connections their tournament has always been kayaks only in the past and as far as she knows it still is only kayaks.

Maybe they are allowing motorized kayaks to join. It does state that this is a kayak fishing berby so one should assume that it is for kayaks whether paddle, peddle or motorized. Looks fun so please don't join I am going to make sure to win this one.

Motor boats

Nothing wrong with a little motor-boatin! I have been called a "motorboatin son of a ..." in the past.  :smt044   [wedding crashers reference btw]

Thanks Allen, somehow I managed to completely overlook that.  I imagine it is either a misprint or there are 2 categories with yaks being in one category and motor boats being in the other.

Called Kayak Connection on my way home and apparently PBs ARE ALLOWED.  The lady said that this was the first year Mark has allowed them.  She also went on to say

He believes that kayaks will be able to compete with the PBs.

I had planned on attending this function but now am on the fence.

I've never fished Moss Landing, so stripers and salmon are basically the only options?  Is there no underwater structure for rockfish?  If not, wouldn't halibut be an option?  Please enlighten me people.

Looking back through past derbies, I noticed that Wilderness Systems used to sponsor the event. Seems like they don't sponsor any local/norcal events anymore. Bummer too, because I'd actually like to add another Tarpon to my fleet haha.

Michael, there's plenty of variety to target out there. But the main quarry would probably be salmon & halibut. There's potential for stripers outside the surf, but you'd have a better shot at rockfish/cabs/lings near the jetties or at one of the local pipelines/rockpiles that are nearby (noted on the FishNmaps, Navionics charts, etc). Also potential for rockies along the submarine canyon walls. Heck, if leopards are part of the derby then you could possibly target them inside the harbor.
