We just made the following changes to the NCKA KAYAK CRABFEST AT HALF MOON BAY scheduled for this Saturday, April 24th.

THE CHANGES:

1)  This derby has been downscaled to a more laid-back "crab-n-chill" potluck format.
2)  The $30 Entry Fee is no longer required for this event.

REASONS FOR THE CHANGES:

1)  Although the weather forecast is for clear and sunny weather for this event, the marine forecast for the area is for
NW winds 15 to 25 kt. Wind waves 3 to 5 ft. NW swell 7 to 9 ft. .  Although those conditions are very doable for experienced kayakers, it might be a bit difficult for some kayakers and newbies trying to manage multiple crab traps from their kayaks for the first time.

2)  Rather than cancel the event, we decided to postpone our first big NCKA CRABFEST DERBY to later this year when the dungeness crab season re-opens in November.  This event will be a good trial for the November Derby when bigger attendance and bigger prizes expected.

3)  The $30 entry fee was going to cover food, drink, parking, and overnight car camping.  However, the new harbormaster wouldn't officially waive the overnight car camping fee that the HMB Kayak Company tried to arrange.  However, camping Friday night is still the fun way to go if you can make it.  Just beware -- the harbormaster may or may not try to charge us the $30 car camping fee.  Since we'll be parking at the unpaved HMB Kayak Company parking lot (about the size of a football field) he just may let us slide without paying.

THE GOOD NEWS!!!

Although our full-scaled CRABFEST derby has been postponed to November, Promar (our prize sponsor) will still be providing free schwagg and prizes.  Thank you Promar!!!

We hope that taking the entry fee out of the equation will make it more enticing for everyone to come out and enjoy the fun this weekend.

I'll be there. Pillar point and mavericks usually knocks the NW swell down a bit. Traveling light, locked and loaded.  :smt068 Did you want me to grill some man dogs? If yes, need a head count.

I think it'll be a blast to get there Friday, soak some traps (inside and/or outside of the harbor), and check them every few hours or so.   In the meantime we can hangout in camp, drink beer, BBQ, sample some fresh crab, and fry goodies in Andy's fryer all night long NCKA style :beer2 :camp :cook

Hey!

Not sure if I'll be able to attend, but would I be allowed to use a sail on my hobie outback?

Thanks!

Craig

Sure...no problem.  Just be careful.  It might be tough using the sail in stiff winds.

GB2, Chuck... Having only had my Trident 15 local fresh water + the Elkhorn Slough to date, I wasn't sure if I'd put her in this weekend. Regardless of that, I will *DEFINITELY* be driving up to meet some fellow NCKA-ers for the first time. It's still Saturday AM, correct?

Best,
Jeff (a.k.a. Steelerhead)
You should have seen the one that got away!

Well now the swell forecast is back up but the wind is doable. Art I use the NOAA point forecast.

http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=37.489025074767866&lon=-122.47833251953125&site=mtr&smap=1&marine=1&unit=0&lg=en

Saturday: NW wind 8 to 13 kt. Sunny. Mixed swell...W 8 ft at 14 seconds and S 1 ft at 15 seconds. Wind waves around 2 ft.

Jeff - I would bring your T15. It is a good place to get use to paddling in swells since it is not a surf launch and if it is bad you can stay in the harbor. I use my T15 for crabbing because it is super stable in swells  compared to my P15. Might be halis around also. The west swell gets into most locations so outside the harbor will be bumpy. If you have scopace, bring it.  :smt005
