What i'm trying to figure out is how the winds blow. Do i get downslope winds in the AM? is there typically a calm period?  PM?

Here's the specifics: early May.
Up waikaloa rd - early early AM - will there be winds coming down slope?
across saddle rd (towards hilo), again- which way is the wind blowing? figure this one is still earlyish (8-10am)
Mauna KEa access rd...I"m assuming that the winds will be blowing in your face as you head up this monstrosity- correct?

You could try going to http://www.aquahunters.com/ and ask the locals.  Must be doing a bike ride, eh?  :smt001

Don't know it but I wish I was experiencing it.  Rode home from the train last night, it was cold as HELL!   :cold

Is this one of your target events or an add on you will ride as a build up for later in the season?

add on....my wife not-so-innocently said, "why don't you do this as a training ride?"  http://bicycling.trimbleoutdoors.com/ViewTrip/241180

I've always wanted to have done that- HUGE gain more or less a sufferfest, so right up my alley. She's willing to run support, so...well...ummm...why not at least try?

It's common to have the trade winds on the east side of the Island.  It's also common to have sudden, strong  storms develop, where you seek shelter and the rain come down in buckets.  Half and hour later, it clears up and gets quite warm again.
