Big Fish Pool for '05

Anyone interested in putting in a couple bucks for a Norcal big fish pool for next year?  Maybe $5 a category: Halibut, Salmon, Striper, Lingcod, Sturgeon.

I'm interested sounds like fun.  How would you suggest we manage it?  Could we participate in some species but not others (for example, I'm not going after Sturgeon)?  Would we need a certified scale or would any digital scale do?

I'd suggest using length as the criteria for sturgeon... that way if you catch an oversized fish and have to release it you could still measure it and be in the running.

Maybe we require either:
- weight / length must be verified by another honorable member of the group (which would probably exclude joel)   ; or
- weighed by certified scale; or
- photographed for proof (as in the case of an oversize dino).

But there should be a stipulation that you have to be fishing with another guy from the group as a witness.  It'd be a bummer if there were arguments about wether a fish was caught from a kayak, ect.  What would the rules be?  Powerboats would be cheating, at least for salmon.

IMO, if someone fishes every day and wins, he worked for it and deserves it and lost out on lots of income anyway.  Will the 50lb ling I'm going to shoot in april count?

Kevin, I was thinking we'd only put in on the species we'd be targeting.  So you only get in on the categories you want to.  

Re: Fish Weight

With the sturgies I was thinking weight would be the best measurement, I've seen some pigs that were short for their weight.  How about we use the Length Girth equation for weight estimation on any released fish.  I've never yakfished for them so I'm not sure how easy it would be to get em to sit in your lap while you measure and photgraph them.  Maybe a quick photo next to the boat or a paddle just for scale?  Definitely open to suggestions on this one.  


As for other fish:  

Pic of it weighed on a scale works for me.  Must be caught from a kayak, verified by a fellow yakfisher or if your not fishing with a buddy then an on-the-water shot of the fish laying somewhere on deck should be provided.  

I figured this to be more of a money between friends type of deal, more for bragging rights than profit.  Anyone disagree or wanna add to it? Spark, should we add a spearfishing category for your 50lb ling?

This isn't about big money.  Its about fun and a title.  I highly doubt anyone would fabricate a lie for small $'s.  99% sure I'll be fishing with a buddy, so getting a confirmation is not an issue.

The real issue is verifying the weight.  Its hard to estimate a weight with out a scale.  Also, not all scales are calibrated the same either.  I really hope it comes down to a huge ass fish (30+lbs) that no one will contend.  If it comes down to a lb or 2, then it could be debatable.

The opener derby this year would have been a fiasco w/o using that single digital scale to weigh the fish.  I thought we were going to have a 3 way tie breaker, first fish back to shore wins.  ;^)

The only scale I have is a 100lb scale, so it's not very good for smaller fish, it's give or take a lb...

I don't need a spearfishing category, I was just raising points to help hammer out the rules.

On our March lobster dives the past couple of years we've had a category for "smallest legal lobster." That's the one I'm shooting for!

I am in sounds like a blast.  I think you need an on the water shot a shot with a tape mesure and a shot on a scale.  also what about lmb and trout?
