Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

i've been watching another site tear itself apart.  very painful.   :smt010  whatever you decide to do, i'd recommend small changes, very slowly.  this place and all of you are truely unique!

If it's the site with the rigged elections, I know who you're referring to. Anyone who questions the results gets a "time out" (temporarily banned).

Thanks for p.m.ing me the name of that other "club." Just the info page for new members was enough to make me turn tail. Sounds more like a frat house or a street gang than a fishing club with all their verbal posturing. I did see they had a pic of one of our O.G. members posted up to try to attract new members to their club. What's up with that?  :smt009 jim

I know which club you are reffering to Alan and those are good people! I havn't been a member there for quite some time but I fished with a lot of those guys in the past and always had a great time!

I gotta say you guys I would be happy to pay a fee to come here as I'm sure most would but I think the biggest danger to the club is the elitist attitude. When people get together and target "lurkers" as evil or "takers" it brings down the whole spirit of the place. We all have to start somewhere and many people probably feel that they don't have much to add untill they get some experience.

I've been fishing all my life and first discovered kayak fishing in 1996 when I bumped into some friendly dudes at Lime Kiln in Big Sur. These guys from socal were so nice they let me and my cousin borrow their boats and gear to hit up the kelp beds and get enough rockfish for dinner. I was only 19 at the time but that trip will always be in my memory and is the reason why I love Kayak fishing to this day! If those dudes from L.A. hadn't been so free to share their knowledge and equipment it would have been quite some time before I found out about Kayakfishing.

I guess my point is that we all love fishing and it's up to each of us to share as much or as little as we are comfortable with. None of us invented this sport or even this way of life. I see it as more of a primal urge that you either are born with or you aren't but it's not something that can be explained. I don't care if it's from a kayak, a boat or from shore but I love to fish and intend to do it for as long as I'm able to do so.

Most of the spots that we fish have been fished by others including party boats and private boats for hundreds if not thousands of years. I'm not advocating that anyone give up their favorite "secret spot" but the idea that party boat captians and others are checking on our boards for hot spots is absurd. Seriously these dudes have been fishing bean hollow and the like for a long long time and I think the increase in pressure has a lot more to do with the lack of a salmon season and the shortened rockfish season which forces many traditional salmon boats to target bottomfish.

Anyways I'm sure I've said enough and you all get the point but lets enjoy what we have and share what we like but not get too caught up in the little things to lose the big picture!

It appears to me that the real issue here is cost of running this site.
I can't believe that charging for what has created this great community is the best solution and I believe that if all of us look back we can agree that we were first attracted to this site because it was a free and friendly way to meet others with the same intrest.
With this said I am willing to sponsor an event in which all the proceeds will be used to keep the Karma known as NCKA alive. At this event I will have prizes and raffles as in all of the events I have put on in the past. The only cost to the anglers would be a donation of any size to NCKA and It would be best to have Papa Bill there to collect the entry donations. That's wright ANY SIZE DONATION because I believe it should be what you can afford not what we want.
If this sounds like a good solution to this problem I will make it happen.
So please let me know your thoughts and let's all get back to what we enjoy - Fishing / Kayaking / and having a great time

And errupting silently out of the voice of many came the words of a truly inspirational genius! Yakhopper has spoken.  And so, fish for the cause, we must!

Eric

Couple of different issues which you present.

#1 - Using membership dues to limit membership growth. I don't think this would be in the spirit of NCKA which is an open forum. At this point in my career, I probably wouldn't pay to be a member since I have already achieved my goals for joining and have contributed quite a bit. This may seem self-centered, however, once you have more than enough people to fish with and you kind of know how to fish, NCKA has much less value.

#2 Getting back to the old NCKA times. I am not OG or a newbie so probably a "tweener". I miss the old times also but inevitably people move on and new people are needed to keep the group alive. The real thing that makes NCKA unique is  the quality of the people that comprise the group. The culture is passed to the next generation by people like yourself who serve as a role model by your posts and organizing events like GS3. Thanks!

I'm somewhere between a newbie and lurker I suppose.
I was introduced to the site when I first thought about taking up kayak fishing and it has been not only been an incredible resource but very entertaining.

I work 1.5 jobs so my time OTW is very limited and I tend to live vicariously through the fishing reports.

My $0.02 with regards to members is, let the lurkers be. I like what was done with the fishing reports and let those who participate reap the benefits.
My concern is when you have to pay to play it will become way too political and that would probably turn me off to the board.

I would participate in fund raising activities such as raffles and such if that's what it takes to keep the board up and running. I am no different than most folks who like to gamble a couple of bucks here and there if there's a chance at winning something cool.

After reading this thread I'll throw in for AOTY next year. I may not post a single fish depending on how much work I have next year but what the hell it is angler of the year and not anglers of the year so I guess we can't all win.

As I said just the $0.02 of someone who doesn't fish nearly enough.

AOTY can still be entered, I haven't fished this year unless you count the 20 minutes I got in as my (cracked) yak was sinking, after that life just got in the way and limited my fishing time to pretty much zero, so I don't plan on entering anything but thought it was a good vehicle to donate to the site that I enjoy so much, so I signed up yesterday, better late than never.  And it only takes one fish to win a category so who knows..................

Why does everyone presume it's a cost issue?  What if it wasn't?
