KAYAK FISHING MAUI ?
« on: August 23, 2009, 07:10:14 pm »
  Hi NCKA'ers
Been going to the Big Island and fishing Kona coast for last ten years and know my way around there pretty good. This year is different I'm going to Maui and staying in Hanna for five days. I'll be there in mid November. Does anyone know where I can rent a kayak in Hanna, or somewhere else on Maui? My wife says Hanna's on a bay what about fishing from shore or jetties in the area? Any areas too sharky?
Also what about guides? I read previous post and will get in touch with Jesse and Maui sporting goods.

   THANKS Tight lines Dale

Dale took a 2hr tour with these guys don't know if they just rent but I'm sure they can hook you up.   Hana-Maui Sea Sports

Fishing is Hana is epic.

Like anywhere watch the surf and the wind.  Hana is the windward side, compared to Lahaina and Kihei it can get kind of rough on the outside since you don't know the area be careful...

If you go and it is rough launch out of Hana bay. There is a beach right there. If you google map Hana, you can see some nice reef  outside and to the right.  Further down there is an island off shore. Straight in from that island there is another easy to access beach (Koki Beach) that, depending on the surf, should be an easy launch.  Hamoa beach further down has steps that you would need to get the kayak down. These other two are straight shots and easy parking.

I don't know what kind of fishing you are after, but bottom fishing the outer reef should be killer. Just tie a 3 way swivel with lighter test going to your dropper weight. Use a box of frozen squid or shrimp for bait.

I'm going to go with Jesse in about a month. if you are there sooner, please give me an update. If you are not staying in Hana, I would give a second thought to going there for kayak fishing. The "Road to Hana" is both famous and infamous. You would have to get up way early to make the long slow drive to Hana in order to be early enough to beat the winds
In the game of biggest fish, if you can't enjoy routinely gettin' your ass handed to you, by great fishermen, then you don't belong in the NCKA.
