I saw something similar a while back where there were so many pennies the guy had to use a wheel barrow to haul it in.

I read on the news paper once there's a guy drove to the car dealer carried approximately $11,000 dollars in penies on the back of his old truck to pay for the new truck.  Now that's a lot of pennies  :smt003

Tax dollars hard at work - I counted 3 police cars and the audio stated 7 officers!  At least they stuck it to the rude lady behind the counter.

Did you hear about the guy who lives in an apartment complex in SJ, went on vacation and forgot to put on his new tags first...  came home and his car had been towed, and the company placed a lein in the car and sold his 10k car for like 3 grand....  to an employee of the tow company.

It's a total racket.

It is a racket. The tow company previously contracted with SF was sued for all sorts of BS - including damaging vehicles, stealing possessions from towed cars, or just selling vehicles and pocketing the money.

A friend of mine was driving a CA registered car when it was towed in New York. The tow company wouldn't release his vehicle without a copy of the registration (which he kept in his glove compartment). They let him go to his car to retrieve it but guess what: the registration was missing. He ended up having to deal with the CA DMV over the phone and getting another copy sent to him via express mail before he could get his car out. Final cost included towing, 3 days storage, and CA DMV "above and beyond the call of duty" services.

The lessons learned: Always make multiple copies of your registration (the document itself says that a facsimile is acceptable); keep one at home and another in your car; and if you're travelling far away from home keep a third copy in your pocket.

Just to add to the cautions above. Always sent in (or do the on line thing) the release of liability if you sell your vehicle privately.

I sold an old truck ~3 years ago. Just recently started getting notices from the local tow company if I didn't pay the tow/storage fees and if they couldn't retrieve the fees from the sale of the truck I would be liable for the balance. Apparently the guy never registered the truck and eventually abandoned it. If I hadn't done the paperwork it would have been a real pita.

Even doing it right can end up being a PITA, my son sold a car a few yrs ago, months later he starts getting parking tickets for that car from the city of San Jose, so he calls them, they say he needs to prove you sold it, he says it would be easy for the city of SJ to use a computer thru DMV to confirm, they say not their problem and that HE must supply proof to City of SJ, calls DMV, they say they can supply a certified copy of the release of lialbility for $10 and a 2-4 week wait, meanwhile City of SJ is sending late notices and penalties on the tickets. I told him to get 2 certified copies for next time the a-hole gets a ticket somewhere. Got the paper, sent it to City of SJ, problem solved, but doing it right can still end up being a PITA.

Thru this and another incident I found (DMV told me) that those release of liability forms lay around for a long time before they are entered into any kind of electronic form.

Great  :smt011

When this came up I discovered you can do the release of liability on line. Maybe that will get it in the system sooner...

I have dealt with two yards locally that were stand up operations. Few and far between I am sure, but like any type of business there are legit operations out there.
