When Duane Pape decided that yak fishing was his sport, I became the luckiest  "Nubie" the world will ever see.  Duane determined that he must get two yaks if he is going to get into it. That decision put me on a yak for free.  About a year later, Duane wins at HMB, and scoops up another yak. As the madness continued to churn, Duane has managed to steadily crank out yak invention, after yak invention. One pattent allone, his sturgeon board, pat.pend., is so dam fun, and works so unbelievably well under ideal conditions that, in time all kayak fishermen will recognise his work and inventions. Dare I mention the "rod slide" pat. pend.
Picture viewing your GPS, fishfinder, and rod tip in perfect harmony. Your fishing sturgeon, and you get to keep your drag tight, with some sweet, 30 lb. braid, running from your stick, on the rod board, mounted too your rod slide. The slide, with your stick is pushed forward, well out of your way, pole balanced to perfection.  Strong sucking on your shrimp, coupled with the Firm out going tide, cause your stick to turn violently down.  You reach down, and leasurly grasp the leash to the rod slide and pull the stick into your hands.  It's fish on again.
Having ether fished, or seen nearly all existing fixed rod holder combinations.  Nothing, and I mean nothing, can compair with a highly adjustable rod holder that may be pushed out of the way and pulled back into action, nothing. Now almost off Duane's Cobra, and on my 09 Malibu extreme, I am truly humbled by the attention to each and every detail Duane is taking, as he turns a nice yak, into yet another featured spot at those Fred Hall shows.
Having lucked into yak fishing, via my meeting Duane, while fishing at the end of Powell St. Emmeryville, these many years ago, I am so gratefull to Duane. In my twenties I turned down a job offered to me by the owner of Nike, but with the swoosh being upside down and all, and that whole concept store thing, just selling athletic shoes and all. That was the single largest financial mestake I ever will encounter by far.  I digress, the feeling however, that exileration, that rush  that comes from doing something that you love, not only well, but the very best you can, that feeling hit me today. "Billie Maze", speaking of digression, that feeling of loving to do a great job, has hit me from all imaginable angles over the years. Now more than ever appreciating the talents of others, especially when there overall personalities translate into that of happy, healthy, funny, tax paying citizens, makes most days for me worth living.
Rock cod season has finally arrived. That sentence is one of the many mantras my inner monologue screams more, and more, as I begin to prepair for that last 12 hour shift at the sun shine factory, before I take half of this years vacation time. Among the biggest wishes both Duane, and I have for all of us yak fishermen, is safety. Many people realize that this is not the sport for them, IE. they recognize that they, among other things, can't get back in the yak. Not everyone that gets on a yak fully realizes this until they do it. For those that can do it, speaking for myself first, practice safety. To all the wonderfully fun loving, yak fishermen out there, have a superb summer.

There's definitely something in the water up there, (the drinking water).  Maybe I should expand my home search to include SL.
