Could be but I prefer to reserve judgment. I've heard that about a lot of new reels, lines and lures that are common place today. I just thought that the concept was pretty cool.

At $200 a pop I would have that thing tethered down to my yak with cable!!! No way would I want it going over the side.
Seriously tho, I can't think of many if any fish I lost due to reel malfunction or poor performance. It has always been an error on my part.
I feel I will catch just as many fish with a mid priced reel as I will with a higher priced one. Maybe even more since I could concentrate on the fishing and not protecting such a valuable reel.

If you go to the Outdoor Pro Shop in Rohnert Park, they have one of these on a rod with a little practice plug that you can try it out with.

Kinda cool... but only handy IMO for a few very specific types of bass angling.  To each their own I guess...

Maybe its cause I'm kind of a tackle whore, but I think thats a pretty damn cool reel.  Don't know if I'd ever buy one but think of the possibilities that may stem off it.  Reels that automatically engage and disengage for salmon mooching  :smt007

No worries, just my opinion.  I'm not bashing people.

You want super tech get the shimano that has the computerize anti backlash.

You can chuck this thing as hard as you can with no thumb and no backlash.

Quote
During the initial moments of a cast, the energy generated by the rotation of the spool is stored in the digital control circuit board and used to power the digital braking system for subsequent casts. The waterproof digital control system of a Calcutta TE DC is a self-energizing system, recharging with each cast.

By simply turning the external 8 position dial to the selected setting, the Calcutta TE DC allows access up to 8 different pre-programmed braking patterns based on lure type, wind conditions, or casting method. The digital control braking system allows the electromagnetic brake to be applied every 1/1000 of a second. As the brakes are activated, the digital brake system emits electronic beep sounds reinforcing the sense of digital control.

With this technology, each of the 8 pre-programmed braking patterns provide awesome control of the feeding of the line by applying the ideal amount of braking force at critical intervals. As a result, it is possible to achieve long, accurate casts with consistent backlash control

I think it is like 500 bucks though.

Fished It last year for steelhead awesome free-spool. Hated the beeping, cast control didn't impress me,I rarely use cast controls. I guess if you were casting 1/4 cranks in to the wind it would be useful, but I would use a spinning reel for that. Nice finish too heavy. Bought a Morrum IVCB instead for a lot le$$ much lighter.

Yeah, I had a buddy that bought one, and returned it like a month later.

IMHO no reel is worth 500 bucks.

Seriously, the best bass baitcaster I have found for value and performance is the curado 201BSF.

I love that reel.

I second that...the Curado ROCKS!
When the Lord takes your sins, you never see them again. He casts them into the depths of the sea, forgiven and forgotten. I even believe that He places a sign over them that reads no fishing allowed.

I have an Abu Garcia "anit-backlash" bait caster reel.  This thing is supposed to not backlash, and  it won't when you cast an 8oz lure!  Anything less, I was pushing luck.  Can't recall the model number, it sure looks pretty though. It has a mechanical brake, (a little flapper that the line is snaked over and thru, before exiting the reel, and, well, was just too much work to deal with.  For mooching, It'll probably work fine. The insulated SS mug that came with it holds bloody mary's real well also.
When I start fishing the Santa Cruz bay waters I'll start with it.
