Just made it back home from the biggest hookup in NCKA HISTORY!  :smt007

Only one word describes the whole weekend for me."EPIC"

This event had everything! Three days of excellent fishing and nights of partying with the NCKA crew!  The food, the beer, the PEOPLE, the fishing, the evenings, sunrises, sunsets, stories, and of course the comradery...

A HUGE thanks to Eric for putting on this event!!!  I'd say the best part was meeting all the really cool people for the first time and seeing my pals from past hookups.  You guys are all AWESOME and I hope we all get out there and do GMS IV next year together!

A special thanks for everyone that helped me out there on the water (i'll explain later...) I owe you all a debt of gratitude that will never be forgotten.

Al,

I was happy to see you cracking jokes on the beach/launch. Glad the only thing lost was a VHF!

Epic indeed.

This was my first NCKA event, so I didn't know what to expect.  Throughout the trip I was the recipient of tremendous generosity and kindness.  I have yet to meet a finer group of people.

Special thanks to Great Bass 2 for lending me the Yak and giving me a homemade ling magnet jig, Eric for being the most attentive yet laid back host, Ariel and Jedmo for the advice, camaraderie and octopus sashimi.

This is one noob who will be smiling for weeks.

On the drive home I got to thinking. That it is really great to have emergency workers (police, fire, etc) on this team. It showed me that at ANY point get on the radio and ask for help. I wondered if I would have made that call in time. It may be a case of pride, embarrassment, or just plain stupidity. But now I'll follow the WHEN IN DOUBT MAKE THE CALL.

Danglin' thanks for showing me how to get it done.

We'll be hearing and seeing a lot about the events within the event, like Al's Whitewater Adventure.  EWB's right - Al made the right call at the right time, and he's also right that all of us should take a hard look at when we should make similar calls in similar predicaments.  Well done, Al, and well done, Team - the rescue, radio and ground assistance, boat recovery and attitudes were all awesome to witness (and video  :smt003).  Since all turned out well it turned out to be one the highlights of the weekend for sure.  Danglin's a superhero for his Command Center coolness - I think he and whoever else may have seen Al go over after the distress call probably saved at least Al's boat, and maybe a whole lot more.

This weekend passed my greatest expectations, and it was all about the people.  Great job, Everyone, and Thank You.   :smt001

Here are some pics and video to make that Monday morning a little bit easier………

Launch on Day 1. It felt so good to be back out on the Ocean!

Especially in such a great location

First rockfish of 2009.

The hot stick of the weekend belonged to Jedmo. His first fish, a monster Cab, soon forgotten by what followed.

There are a few commercial guys who fish out of the cove. One of them had a dark sense of humor

The fish of the weekend. It’s all about the blood on the gaf………….

Even transatlantic flights too a detour to see it.

Lisa had a big cab (that’s what the bendo shot is in Al’s report)

Hanging out at the potluck

With Peteb

And Pulled Pork BBQ

Real Men Cook With Lard

NCKA prizes

I released most of what I caught until the last day, when I did what Danglin’ called some “Grocery Shopping”; Two cabs, two big blacks, a Verm and a Ling.

Don doing his own grocery shopping

I went home a happy man

Awsome!! I am so glad I made the decision to head up here and hang with everyone on this site. I only wish I would have had a better chance to hang with everyone off the kayaks more. I brought up my 2 month old and 2 year so I had other things to do after the fishing time.  I would have to say this was the best fishing I ever had on a kayak so far.  10 lings 2 kept(25"and 33") 2 big red(7 1/2lbs one was) and countless blacks and blues. Weather was great but didn't see the ocean as flat as I wanted but it worked fine. I only wish I would have gotten an abalone dive in but there is always next time and there will definitely be a next time. I will get some pictures posted later since it is back to work for now. Hope everyone made it back safe so we can all do this again only bigger next year. Thanks again for putting this together Eric.

Best two days of fishing I've ever had, fish wise.

I made it up on Thursday evening and just kicked it at the hotel for the night. Woke up at 5:30AM to fish on Friday, but had a bad migraine. Popped a bunch of pills and went back to sleep 'til 7:30. I felt better so I shot over to the launch and was on the water a little after 8:00. Conditions were sloppy and I came the closest to getting sick I ever have, so I only fished for a little over two hours, BUT in that two hours I caught four cabbies from 17" - 21", four lings from 27" - 30", and two huge verms in the 20" range. All caught in the 40 - 50ft. range on a split-tail rootbeer scampi tipped with a whole squid.

On game day I popped a few dramamine and was ready to do battle. I launched a little after 7:00AM and spent a good chunk of the morning searching for structure. I ended up with most of the fleet out near the red buoy in 100ft. Picked up a 31" ling, four more keeper size cabs, and two more big verms out there. The conditions started getting pretty hectic out there, so I pretty much was ready to call it a day and head in. As I was paddling in I noticed some sweet structure in 40', so I stopped to fish it. First drop down was hammered and line was peeling off my reel and at one point my line was rubbing on the rocks. Coaxed the fish out of the rocks and up comes a 34" fatty ling. Conditions seemed to calm down a bit so I fished in the shallower areas for a bit and picked up two more legal sized cabs and another big verm. Outstanding fishing. All fish on Saturday came on Papa Bill's hand poured Sluggo bait tipped with squid. Thanks, Bill!

Also thanks to Eric for setting this up. I will definitely be coming back SOON. Thanks to spedrcr for donating the prizes. I was stoked to pick up the seat for 2nd place. Congrats to Jedmo for his 1st place wolf eel (I wanna see the pics!), and it was nice meeting new people and seeing old friends again.

I'll post some pics later.

Congrats to all who made the trek and found the Shelter they were looking for. To those I had time to hang with and those we passed by on the water it was great meeting you and fishing with NCKA'S finest. I wish I could have stayed the whole weekend but as far as opening days that was one of the better I've ever had. Mad props to Eric for being a driving force behind Gimme shelter III and I look forward to your coming videos of it. I took a ton of photos so here's a few to post.
