I am looking at used kayaks for fishing. There are a couple of scupper pros for sale and I was looking for feedback from previous owners. I have two questions, is the secondary stability good enough for fishing and do they make an aftermarket seat for this model. I have a bad back and really need support to last more than a couple of hours.
I went to REI demo days last saturday, they didn't have a scupper pro there. I did try other models and my overall favorite was the standard prowler 13.

Hi BWD:

I feel that the Scupper Pro is a Std. that is hard to beat. The Pro
is like riding a bike. I like the 13 except  the price! :smt044
There is a ggod deall on a 13T in the Classified.

Yes I need to go and demo one first, SF is too far though. The reason I am asking about the seat upgrade is the trident models have a rather flat seat area and the scupper pro looks like it has a recessed seat area that I am not sure is compatable with the aftermarket seats.

bigwave - what's your location? We have Scupper Pro's at Aquan Sports in San Carlos (across REI)...let me know if you want to demo one. We have a boat house in San Mateo.

I have one of the first Scupper Pro tank well models.  I also have a high-back seat for long paddle trips or fishing.  For ab diving the seat well is deep enough and comfortable enough that I don't always take the high back seat.  The Scupper is not as stable as my Hobie Outback or Scrambler, but it sure is a lot more fun to paddle.  The Scupper has was my main ocean boat for years (until shoulder surgery) and I have never had a problem with stability.

Try before you buy and good luck.

My first plastic boat was a scupper proTW. This boat is fast and at 25 inches wide its ok if you are not a really big guy. I am 5-10 and 175 lbs and this boat moves. I bought a t-15 in January this year beacause the SCTW couldn't really handle and huge tidal change with windy conditions coming from the side. Stormscrambler has a t13 all set up and if I were you I would go for it if he still has it. They are more fishing friendly and more stable for bigger water. But for say lake fishing, the SCTW will go faster than most sit on tops.I have 2 scupper pro tw's, 1 OC caper,1 OC t-15 and a pamlico13.5 dual sit-indside. all have thier pros and cons. But all equally exceed each other depending on what you are doing and the weather.

CHUB has been paddling one for abour 6 years and refuses to paddle anything else. He has been in the roughest of conditions and has handled them all.
The only downside IMO to the Scupper Pro is the height of the bow makes for some difficulty handling a serious crosswind.
I have included two random photos of a Scupper Pro vs Prowler 15 in the water.
You can see how high the bows on the SP are.
One thing for sure, CHUB can keep up with me paddling while I pedal my Hobie. The SP hauls @ss.

Hi Tote

Thanks for that info about the bow sitting up so high. I can see that would be a serious problem on a windy day.

I have been out on the ocean at Salt Point in 15MPH winds and there really is not much you can do. Any kayak will get blown off course. The scupper in my opinion is no worse than most boats. Plus if the wind is that bad you might think about not going out. Plus the price of a used scupper pro is really affordable.

The two scupper pro's for sale on CL sold within two hours monday morning. Two things, this must be a popular model to sell so quickly and what the heck are so many people doing surfing the internet during work hours. No wonder our economy is in trouble.
The trident 13 sold also, my bad for waiting till fishing season to find a suitable ride.

the scupper pro is best for smaller and somewhat coordinated people, like under 180lbs who like fairly minimally rigged boats and are willing to do longer paddles to get to fishing grounds.

if you are big, or clumsy, or don't want to paddle much, have a big fat butt ( :smt003 ) or want to put every device known to man on there.. pick something more stable..

I use an old one with a tank well and a rudder (almost always have the rudder up tho) and it's been great for me but I am 160lbs and have surfed for many years and think paddling to fishing grounds is cool..

a similar boat for bigger people is the tarpon 160 series of boats.

Got out wednesday to MBK Moss Landing to demo boats again. They have a scupper tw which paddled nicely, I like the low center of gravity.  The seatwell had one inch of water in it with my body weight, made for a cold ride. That was my only problem with the boat, handled 12 knot winds same as other popular fishing models. If I was only using it for diving it would be just fine. Some people have commented on the prowler being a wet ride but I didn't see that.

Dave:

Scupper pro is FAST.  A bit wet.  handles wind as good as any other OK fishing boat.  I would say "no secondary stability," but it becomes second nature to balance aftermyou get used to the boat.
Other above advice all god, I think. Main thing is the speed and the low center of gravity.  Trade off is the wet ride, even if you have scupper plugs, water comes in off your paddle or over the side.
