Monster sturgeon at China Camp
« on: March 08, 2009, 07:09:20 pm »
We all met at China Camp around 9:30 AM. Allen myself and Sonny. Followed by insiene and naoki a bit later. We fished hard and long today. I caught one striper and I wont say who, caught a sturgeon in 7ft of water that was probably over or close to 7ft long. Those ghosties we pumped yesterday did good for one of us. I will let him tell the story. I will show some pics. They dont even do justice to the size and power of this fish.

It was pretty hectic out there. I hope the other pics show the fish better. These were from my camera as I was trying to position to snare the fish so we could get the hooks out.

I can't wait for the picture of the sturgeon. For a quick instance there I thought I saw
myself. I guess somebody else out there also have a mango color outback.

I also thought it was you Jedmo.  Sorry it wasn't.  But congrats to the person who did land it.

Very cool pics. I heard someone talking up the fish on the radio and I stopped doing what I was doing when I thought I heard " it's as big around as a telephone pole". Sounded like a monster of a fish.

Congrats to whoever caught it!

Awesome! Every now and then the squirrel finds a huge acorn, one so big he has to throw it back.
I want to go again...
I will go again.

Sorry for posting the report a little late.  I was taking extra caution cleanning the mud off the kayak so it can pass the inspection at lake Del Val II 2 weeks from now.  Also having problem uploading pictures to Photobucket so it take longer than I expected.

Allen, Craig, and I met at the Chine Village Camp around 9:30am and we're ready to launch around 10am

It was a beautiful morning to be on the water at China Camp

Later Naoaki and his friend showed-up

By noon time, the out going tide was so strong so my kayak was slowly drifting even I had a 5lb anchor and Allen loaned me another 5lb (10lbs total) with 100ft rope!  So I decided to pop the anchor and paddle to the McNears Beach Park to stop for a lunch snack.

After a quick lunch break, I paddled back to the same area but stay in a shallow area so my anchor can hold.  About 1/2 hour later my bait runner clicker started to "sing"  click...click, my heart was pounding and I'm ready ...click...click..click  I set the hook and...fish on!  :smt007

It took off for a long run all I can do is hoping I won't have to pop the anchor and may end up at the San Rafel bridge or worse... :smt009

Then a saw it jumped out of the water and it was huge so I yelled on the radio "FISH ON AND IT 'S BIG".  Craig replied "I'll come right over".

After 10 minutes or so, I was able to bring it closer to the yak but it took another run toward deeper water.  Another 15 minutes, I got it close enough to take a couple of pictures while holding the rod in the other hand:

After the third run, I thought it must be tired so Craig and I tried to measure the fish against the markers on his kayak and found it to be over size limit  so we let it live to fight another day.

When I got back to the launch area, it's low tide and mud everywhere.  I almost lost both shoes in the mud

We chit chat for about 15 minutes and said goodbye to each other

It was a nice day and another great NCKA hook-up!!! Until next time... :smt006

Sorry, I forgot to thank Allen for loaning me the anchor, Craig for his help with the fish, and Insiene for landing a hand with the kayak.
