It worked - I think your subject line was perfect - that is one way!  However... being it's a barbed hook - depending on where it's "hooked"... I'd explore other methods

OUCH....If the Makers Mark was in process before impalement then one shouldn't drink and fish. If it started after...then drink up my friend! I love the head down during the operation. Yet another reason not to use trebles.

Yup that's what my dad did when I was young and had a barb go through my finger, push it through the other side and cut off the barb.

That is one of the techniques and works well especially with the whiskey before and after. :smt005 If it is not deep or close to the bone, I usually drive the point through the skin and cut off the barb. With small hooks itis not as bad as it seems.

That's THE way!
That hook was buried deep.
If you notice the guy holding the lure was pushing down at the top of the hook which pushed the barb away from the meat inside and allows the hook to travel along the same path as it entered. That step, along with a really fast yank is key. The whisky doesn't hurt either.
Not sure whether to commend them or scold them on not taking the hook off the lure first.
