« on: February 03, 2009, 03:00:07 pm »
Anyone got a vector on where I can do some yakfishing, in and around Oahu during second week of March?

Already checked out plentypupule.com.  Would like to join some locals and paddle out/ fish.

Big Mahalo in advance

Aquahunters.com.  In addition to the forums there, Isaac (Rocket) does trips.

Also Boogie-D at http://coastalkayaktours.com/

I've fished with both of them a couple times now.  Good guys.

They do sporadically.  But most of them are active at Aquahunters.com.  You should check in there and say hi.

Rocket is an awesome fisherman.  If you want to catch pelagic on your own it's pretty difficult.  Depending on what you want to do and catch you can go with a guide, or just rent a kayak, and go on your own.  Roi are easy to catch.  They seem to me like a cross between a grouper and a ling cod.  I would use a sabiki rig on the bottom for bait and then drop something back down on 20-25 pound test.  Roi are easy to catch and are common between 2-5 five pounds.  Ulua would also bite this rig and get very large.  Probably a good idea to carolina rig your baitfish.  Early morning and late afternoon are best.  Large topwater lures work well if you move them really fast.

Make sure you check the weather.  Someone recently died on the Big Island as a result of kayakers going on the ocean and not paying attention to weather forcast.  Also if you are Island hopping and going to the Big Island pm me, and I'll hook you up, if I can with a great kayak fisherman.  I learned to kayak fish in Kona.  Wish I would have thought more about safety back then.  Glad I didn't have to learn from my mistakes

Their contact form is kind of wacked out right now for some reason, but i sent Isaac an email this morning.  I'm getting so stoked for this trip.

I just found out that one of my friends from GRADE SCHOOL now lives and works in Honolulu.  Talk about a freaky connection.  Can't wait!

Martin -

You can pm ROCKET or contact him through the aquahunters website. I was going to do a guide trip with him last year but he was out of town. There are some good yak fishing spots on the drive to the north shore, at least that is where I have fished before and done well. If you are up near the north shore, check out the shrimp trucks for excellent garlic shrimp. I like Giovanni's, but they are all pretty good. They fish a lot of bait live and dead, but Rapala CD 14's work good as do the big x raps. I have a bunch of them if you want to borrow some. Have a good one!!!

Hey Howard:

my brother's going to a conference.  so he invited all of us out, including mom and dad.  My b-day falls in that week, too.  Maybe i'll run into you again at West Marine on a pre-trip splurge.   :smt005

as far as an annual trip, kristal's family is trying to get me to go sailing in Greece or Viet-frickin-Nam or some other far fetched destination later in the year, but I'm kind of eeeehhhhh this year for some reason.

Are the garlic shrimps as tasty as the ones you made for last years Loch Lomond shore lunch?  Man, that was good eats!  I've got a bunch of Magnum X-raps that i'll be bringing, as well as terminal gear.  Not sure what rod, if any, might just bring a reel and pick up a pole there so I don't have to mess with ship/hdling.  Thanks for the tips.

Martin, reminder that there is a new West Marine next to REI in San Carlos, across the street from Aquan.

I usually bring a 20-30# mono rig for live bait and trolling for mahi mahi and a 50-60# spectra rig for ulua. I use a medium action rig for mahi mahi because they often go arial and can break you off with the head shakes. I used to pack them in a PVC tube and check them at the airport. Last year UAL lost my rods until my last day in Baja and that experience along with the $150 surcharge for oversized baggage resulted in me building a pair of travel rods.

Why'd a wait so long to book airfare?!  OUCH!!!

TOTAL AIR COST (USD):    $ 781.52  (for two from SJC to HNL)

Its a little cheaper flying out of LAX (where everyone else is departing).  Still I thought airlines were dropping rates? :smt012
