Other than wanting to expand a bit into the bass and bay species next year (not JUST for AOTY  :smt002), I'm trying to brainstorm some other cool adventures to explore on the yaks.  Surf fish, or Smelt, comes to mind.  Riding a wave with an open A-Frame sounds down-right dangerous (not that I wouldn't consider it under the right conditions  :smt003), but hanging in little breakers along the beach with my Dad's throw-net, or riding a wave in with a fine-mesh net, dipping for the little critters is sounding pretty fun and exciting.  The tripod would likely get in the way  :smt004, but I may have to get one of those more-affordable helmet cams this coming year too.

Anyone else have some ideas for non-traditional styles or species to pursue OTW next year?  Eels?  Seals?!  Fishing w/ banana peels?!!  (that one's been done!  nice work, Al.   :smt058)

Lake Sonoma looks like a blast and is on my eventual-wishlist too - gotta love multi-species opportunities.

Red-tail perch are also something I'd love to find the yak-angle for.  Catching big squawfish on the Eel in the Summer is a goal too - just to get 'em out of the river!

Erik I have an area on the RR where I drift my mini-x about 3 miles then put it on the kart and pull it back to the car along a gravel road,I would like to find more of these types of areas. What I think would be cool is to find a small lake that has zero access but we could kart in to.

If you are going to fish for trash fish, then they might as well be big ones, that's what I say.  Laugh if you will, but I think the humble carp is a blast on light tackle.  In Europe they have dedicated carp tackle shops, like our Bass Pro Shops.   They can't believe how much we disrespect this "noble fighter."   Where else can you basically be assured of nailing a 5-20 pound fish every time you go out?  In FRESH water no less... I have caught carp in Mountain Lake Park in SF.  I have caught them in rivers, anywhere there is slow fresh water.  They will hit a fly happily if you put it on their nose (any dark nymph works).  And they fight hard, much harder than a comparable-sized stocked trout that grew up in a swimming pool eating dog food; and by the way, they are not stocking anymore so your favorite trout lake just became a carp lake.  So give it a shot; dough balls with a little molasses mixed in works great.  I would join you; San Pablo Res supposedly has some monsters.  what a tow it would be...

In the salt, a mother ship trip to the Farallones, or a multi-day trip working down the Lost Coast and beach camping, these are my dream trips.

Campsites but they don't look that exciting.

I have been thinking the same thing about other ways to use this great versatile vehicle called a kayak.

Take a look at this guys videos http://nwwoodsman.com/Videos/video.html.

I know California is lot different than Washington and Oregon when it comes to wilderness, but there has to be Rivers or Lakes where kayakers could do the same.

Anybody have locations for some great adventures?

I owe you a debt of gratitude, shifty1.  That NWWoodsman site is totally awesome.  I just watched "Five days on
Ross Lake (WA)" and just about started to whimper in ecstacy!  We're talking chi energy flowing out the top of my head during the gorge scenes from 4 minutes to 4:30.  This guy's a pro.  I bow down in admiration and respect.  :worship

I like your thought, and there are likely some gems here in Cali that could rival what I just saw, but I'm not sure of that - it looked like heaven on earth, and had the feel of something as remote as the Marble Mountains or Trinity Alps.  Very very impressive beauty there - I'm glad to know that exists!

Wow!  Thank you.   :smt007

Those videos remind me of a canoe trip I took 35 years ago in the Boundary Waters Wilderness in Minnesota. We were outfitted for a 7 day trip and after we got to our base camp on the 2nd day, a small island, we never saw another person for 5 days.

Are there any places like that here in California?

I was searching lakes and rivers on Microsoft's Virtual Earth and saw some interesting ones but not sure about multi day trips and camping. Seems like most rivers run thru private land so access is limited.

Boat-In camping in Tomales is one of the coolest things I've ever done.
