Great story!  Thanks for posting the followup.  Now we know these weren't complete ametuers who'd done a very stupid thing - they were pretty experienced, and they did a stupid thing that could've happened to the best of us.  We can question why she didn't get back on her yak, but I don't know that it was a SOT, so maybe she could not have done so.  In any case, after the blunder and she was drifting out it sounds like they both did the right things.  Bravo to all involved.   :smt001

I know Johnny and Benita they are super nice people and spend a lot of time outdoors. Johnny used to work part time at REI after he retired from the county.

Its ironic that when Erik K and I drove by yesterday I remarked how the Russian river was just ripping out of the mouth.

Spooky. What a difference a day (and some tractorwork) can make. From pond to hydraulic railroad.
I'm especially struck by this story as it's not one of those "what noobs to not know..." type of accidents (despite the hater comments on the article). I used to paddle the Russian a lot in that area, although not at night.
So glad to see all turned out well. That was a close one!

Spooky. What a difference a day (and some tractorwork) can make. From pond to hydraulic railroad. Not only Mother Nature can change conditions on us,I have had a few spooky incidents with upstream water releases and an upstream dam breakage that could have turned out differently if I had panicked. I have seen a canoe get swept out at Jenner and it was amazing how fast it happened. Dress for immersion whenever there is a chance you are going to be in cold water, I think Benita is very lucky the water has warmed in the last few weeks a few degrees colder and she wouldn't have been so lucky.

Erik I assumed it was a SINK when Johnny said

FYI-having spent MANY days on the mouth of the river when its breached there is no major current until you get right in the guts of it...these poor folks just ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time.

When we were coming back on Sunday form ab diving I commented on how high the lower river was due to the mouth being closed. Brit Horn is a fearless lifesaver. Thank God there are guys like him who will just go and try to get the job done. These people were very lucky to have a savior like Brit.

Paddling jenner on a full-moon is spectacular.   watching the sun set over the ocean while the moon rises over the river at the place where the river meets the sea is pretty magical in my book. Hanging on for dear life at night in hypothermic, shark infested waters......not so magical.

Pretty good lesson here on the value of a headlight or a beacon of some sort if you're caught out after sunset.

And I think the story of the rescue is a great one, with a combination of good luck, good efforts, and good people.
Always willing to join others in the Monterey/Santa Cruz/Half Moon Bay area for a bit of fishing...feel free to contact me.

Totally! ...and "old-school" "tried n' true" rescue skillz! Good paddleboarders are truly amazing athletes.
