That dude is crazy! There are frequent littoral explosions that extend beyond the distance he is paddling from the lava. They occur without warning, and can hurl chunks of lava 30 yards into the air.

Every water related activity has a derogatory slang term, ie bodyboarders are "spongers", kayak surfers are "buttsurfers", bodysurfers are "speedbumps", etc.
I just heard the one for standup paddleboarders the other day....
