Rash Guards are basically like under armor for surfers.

You live in san jose you should go to  Outback Adventures . Talk to jay, Christina. They are very knowledgeable and have a great selection of yak accesories. Framer johns ,pfds, rod holders and all the stuff to pimp out your yak. Also mention NCKA and they will give you 10% discount.

how does a guy go about putting a relief zipper in his farmer-john ?

First, it's allot of work, second you probably don't want to do it on a good suit or the suit you dive in. AND third I imagine you could end up with a real mess if something goes wrong. I've done it twice and had it come out well but I've had some experience altering suits to fit my kids. in fact if you've never worked with neoprene glue you should practice on something else first.

A relief zipper is a must for me and I wanted a bit more than the 3mil NRS suit.  I did it once years ago on an old 1/4 suit and it worked well, so this time I bought a new (cheap) 5mil from Wetsuit Warehouse, plastic sport zippers are available from most fabric stores, I got mine a Walmart no less, 7" I think.

Put the suit on, mark where you want the zipper, remember you'll be in your yak, mine is placed so I don't even have to move out a sitting position.

Make sure the zipper is at least 2-3" longer than the hole you're going to cut in your suit.

Carefully cut the suit where you want the hole, it's best if you can actually cut a 1/4" strip out the length of the hole so that the teeth of the zipper don't contact the suit.

after the hole is cut turn the suit inside out, lay it out smooth and using duct tape (on the outside of the suit, which is now on the inside) make sure the hole is dimensionally stable, does that makes sense. you definetly need something to hold the suit shape as you do the final gluing.

So now you should be looking at the inside of your suit, with the hole looking at you. Now glue the zipper in place over the hole with the teeth of the zipper laying in that 1/4" strip that you cut out.

On gluing BE CAREFUL not to get any glue on the zipper teeth.
Use fresh (new bottle) neoprene glue, coat the suit liberally a little wider than the zipper and at least long enough to glue each end of the zipper down tight, remember it's 1-2" inches longer than the hole on each end. and coat the fabric of the zipper and let dry for about 5 minutes, then coat both again and let dry for 5 minutes, or follow the directions on the container

Then put the zipper in place and press it together.  THIS IS NOT GOING TO BE EASY, you're working in the crotch area that does not want to hold still and lay flat. After you do get the zipper in place, do allot of pressing, every few minutes for the first hour or so, after you're sure the zipper is stuck firmly where you want it, try and open it, work with it up and down until you're sure there's no glue that's gonna glue it shut as it dries, At this point it should be an hour after you put the zipper in place, at that time I liberally sprinkle the area with baby powder which means hopefully that any excess glue will be rendered "unsticky"

after it's dried for a day I put a few heavy stitches across the top and the bottom of the zipper to make sure there is no big "AH shit" as the suit rips from the hole I cut in it.

Wow was that over kill, or what???  pardon the porn pose but here's an inside and outside pic of mine.
