Aquahunters Makahiki Tournament
« on: April 17, 2008, 11:20:14 pm »
Aloha friends,

The tournament has gotten off to a nice start with David "Boogie D" Elgas and myself battling for point leader early. Boogie has had an incredible tournament with 6 mahimahis thru 2 1/2 months. Add on a 32lb ulua and you see his inshore big game skills are excellent. One of Boogies best days was a three mahi banger!! Also in the mix are Big Islands Aloha Dan and Steve Huesser, while the fishing has been slow, we will know when the bite picks up. Dan has managed some success when he pulled up the new Aquahunters Club Record: Lancet fish. Its even rare to catch them from boats. Jesse Johnston in Maui had early success before being hit with repeated whitewashes. Aquahunters TEAM member Craig Colburn also has been catching just enough to stick around before the real bite comes in May and June. Our most interesting anglers are the Uyeda Brothers who fish off a Ocean Kayak Zest 2. They have set the new ono club record with a massive 41.5 lber. Then they pulled up another one 30 lbs. I have had plenty of great days, many have been fishing with Boogie. The competition in fierce but so fun and satisfying. We are having a great season so far. Stay tuned for more reports. Aloha, Roc

Z,

The Trident has performed great. The electronics are accurate and durable, the Rod Pod or Catch Hatch has been the perfect thing for quickly bagging fish. Sturdy boat which has been surprisingly getting faster the more I ride it. I have a rudder but I haven't even put it down, the boat turns well enough with a paddle. I would rate it a 9 out of 10. Hey Rocket

I noticed that you and some of the other guys are using spinning equipment. Is that for throwing light swimbaits or live bait?

Aloha Scott,

We are trolling dead baits and sometimes we are using live baits. Roc

Right on rocket. I was just getting ready to do an update NCKA but you have covered about all bases. the tournament has been a lot of fun and I have some of my best days of fishings ever. nothing like a little competition to fire up the boys. the catches just keep comming and we are having an excellent year of fishing on Oahu. with the growth of the aqua hunter forum new anglers are poping up every day. new sponsors are driving the sport and next year the competition schedule looks to be more promising. I got some pics of a 53 pound ono I recntly caught as well as a double tuna strike that i landed. I will post them later. see you in the water. aloha

The Cho Brothers (Andy and Steve) from the Big Island have been on FIRE and have stormed up from nowhere to 3rd and 4th place in the tournament. Isaac "Rocket" Brumaghim is in the lead closely followed by David "Boogie" Elgas, and hot on their tails are Andy Cho and Steve Cho. Here are some of the Cho brothers' catches...

Aquahunters Makahiki Tournament is BLOWING UP!
« Reply #13 on: September 07, 2008, 07:15:03 pm »
The Aquahunters Makahiki Tournament ends on Tuesday, September 30. It is an incredible race to the finish! HUGE fish are being caught and the leader board changes daily. Four fishermen are within striking range of the championship! Andy Cho, Isaac "Rocket" Brumaghim, Steve Cho, and David "Boogie-D" Elgas and in an unbelievable race to the finish. The latest catches include a 65# baracuda by Boogie, a string of mahimahi and ono by Rocket, Andy breaking 5 Aquahunter records, and a 132.5# black marlin caught by Steve Cho just this weekend!!!!!! Someone (if not me) will be sure to update this at the end.
