San Mateo Bridge - 1/9 report

Ken and I fished the North side of SMB at 40 feet of water hoping for some dinos. We both caught a mess of sharks and a couple of BIG king fish instead Tide was very low on the way back - I had the yak hit bottom and got stuck in the mud and I still had about 200 yards to get to the shoreline.  I managed find 2 ft of water and paddled all the way to shore. Ken had to get off the yak and walk a bit to get back into at least 3 ft. of water.

The conditions were great - but the current was strong - TONS of debri floating along current. Had a large tree trunk (the size of my yak) head my way - had to use my paddle to push it off to keep it from hitting my bow.

I know what you mean.  We saw huge tree stumps and telephone poles floating by us.  On the way back in my friends motor boat, it was like dodging land mines.

That always makes me nervous when anchored.  Imagine if a submerged log snagged on your anchor line...  

Those sharks under the bridge are fun.  I'll be back there in may or so when they'll be on the prowl big time.  How big were they?

Josh - they avarage about 20 to 30 inches.

I'd like to use my steelhead rod with 8# mono with spider wire leader - I bet they are fun to catch with a light set up.

There's big sevengills in that water, and big leopards too.  I like a 20lb setup with a 50lb mono leader going to 5/0 circle hooks.  Sharks are not line or hook shy at all, and that setup will take even the largest of them from a yak.
