Coming in backwards gives you more power to paddle over the waves and keep them from pushing you along, and the bow of most tankwell boats rides up the wave better - but there isn't a huge difference.

The majority of flips occur in <2' of water where the previous wave is backwashing into the next wave.  I find it kind of funny that people wipe out in knee-deep water when all you have to do is hop out and grab one of the end handles.  :smt017   I've never had a kayak roll without me in it.
