Launched at pacifica with my brother. We thought it would be easier to be closer to the pier. Had a solid strike, but nothing else. All the boats were going south, so we decided to beach the yak and go for linda mar.
Got wasted by a wave, and lost my sunglasses. I was really bummed about that - if anyone by any chance finds a pair of Arnettes in the surf, let me know please. I'll give a reward for those shades...
Anyway, went to Linda Mar. Launched and fished staright out about a mile. Caught a 7 pounder or so, then nothing else. One missed strike.

Well, it eases the pain knowing there are other lost-items-in-the-surf stories...
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

Steve - if your net has a hallow handle - remove the bottom cap and stuff some styrofoam peanuts in there so it floats - just a suggestion  :smt002

If anyone needs styrofoam peanuts - I have a steady supply of 'em...send me a PM for a hook-up  :smt002

OR...you can buy some pool noodles at any toy store or Hardwear store and slip 'em on the handle and secure it with some plastic tie downs.....you can do this with your fish bat / gaff as well (if you have one that does not float) I suggest buying a pool noodle with a bright neon color to it so it stays visible once you dump on the surf.

As of Todays date, nothing lost at linda mar, and not a flip over yet.  (in over 1 1/2 years anywhere)  I'm due so it's only a matter of time.  Joel took a nice backwards approach flip and I watched him land on his head.  I think he lost his glasses on that one.
After numerous lessons from joel how great the backwards approach is, I always come in Bow first.  My approach has always been to get right behind the breaking wave and then paddle as hard as you can.

(one pair of glasses at oneil forebay)

Yeah, when we were coming in at Pacifica, we timed it wrong and a big wave started to curl right behind us, so we turned around to face into the wave. It turned out that was the wrong thing to do. It simply pushed the bow of the kayak up so high that we tumbled out of the boat. The water was only waste deep. If I'd known, I would have jumped ship before spilling...

Chuck - I attached a small crab trap float on my driftchute - floats pretty good.

Joel..

You are exactly right, I just never liked the backwards in approach.
