are these fish rare or somthing?

Sharks are generally rare and overfished. There aren't huge schools of them swimming around like salmon...I'd love to catch one, but would probably release it.

Hi Mike,

It is also good to cut into the tail or cut off the tail to help it bled.

Hey Guys

That was by far the hardest I ever had to work to get a fish in the kayak. When it first hit my rod went straight over and I watched in about 15 seconds half of the line peel away on my Calcutta 250. Joel see’s the shark jump and yells THRESHER. At that point it goes deep and then starts swimming really fast back to the kayak. He jumped probably 4 times and made 5 or 6 long runs. I finally got him to the kayak and he was about 7 feet under the kayak swimming back and forth for while Joel tries to position himself to net it.  Finally he surfaces and Joel grabs his tail and lifts him into the net.  Many thanks Joel. You are the man!

let me just add this to Mike's report:

...as soon as I got the shark on board my yak, Mike and I called it a day and we paddled in. Mike lands his kayak first...and I come in a few minutes after. As I was landing my yak - with the thresher secured by my game clip and to the yak, I was in 3 ft of water when I was just about to dismount from my yak.... the shark slips to the side and into the water - creating a "drift chute effect" on my stearn-first landing.....it turns my yak slightly to the side...a breaker comes crashing on my slightly turned bow and flips my yak over....taking me along with it  .....Mike comes running to my aid...at least that's what I thought until I CLEARLY heard him say "WHERE'S MY SHARK?!! WHERE'S MY SHARK?!! He obviously did not give a rats ass about my well being and was more concerned about his "catch"  

But that's OK   It was Mike's day on the water and I was just happy to see him hook-up and it was definitely a treat to watch him battle the beast (like a pro).

Besides, I would have reacted the same way  

Mike = you are skilled - to land a fish like that on light line  

WHERE'S MY FILLET?!!! WHERE'S MY FILLET??!! (gotta mooch while I can )

I have seen you flip so many times it was no big deal. Maybe next time you can ride the wave in forward instead of backwards. It usually makes for an easier exit off of the Yak. I'm glad you decided to stow your rods!

Was the shark subdued at that point?  If not, I'd probably have hatched a brown trout if I was sitting alongside that shark.  Even with a face like Jimmy Durante that thing's probably got an attitude on it.  Glad you didn't lose any gear and stuff.

Yakuza - the shark was dead before it even made it up on my deck. I made sure of that    When Mike had the shark running circles around his yak, I came in (and I had the bat hanging from my mouth cause I knew it would require both hands to get hold of it) and the shark actually swam underneath my yak and as soon as I saw the tail, I grabbed it and held on to it for at least a minute - to see if it would make any sudden moves...but surprisingly, it was tame and so I pulled it up to where the head was visible and I gave it a dozen wacks on the head   Game over
